The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered

part, Remastered

With the arrival of The Last of Us Part 1the ‘remake’ of the 2013 game for PS3, players suspect that something similar could happen with The Last of Us Part 2. That game not only came surrounded by controversies and leaks, but it felt like the closing of the PlayStation 4 generation.

In our 2020 review, we tell how The Last of Us Part 2 It dazzled us with its stealth systems, its immersive setting and the great amount of attention to detail put by the developers so that Ellie emerged as one of the great protagonists of video games. You can read our review here to find out in depth our general opinion of the game and what it meant at the time.

The launch of the HBO TV series allowed Ellie and Joel’s story to transcend to the masses. This renewed interest in The Last of Us not only made possible the ‘remake’ of the first game, but also the remastering of part 2 in which Not only are the graphics improved, but it has several playable features that will be interesting for new players and for those who have already seen the credits of that adventure..

In this remastering, Naughty Dog updated the game’s graphics and it looks better than ever. It adapted several features to the DualSense controller taking advantage of the ‘haptic feedback’ and adaptive triggers, added options for PS5 ‘Activities’, additional performance settings for different screen types and the occasional improved accessibility option.

These changes are standard and what is expected from a remaster, but there is more. We have the new ‘No Return’ game mode—a ‘roguelike‘ which we will talk about later -, a ‘speedrun’ mode and a list of what every fan of the game wanted: more collectibles, a mode to play the guitar (and other instruments) freely, “lost levels” and — the most important thing for us—comments from the creators and a documentary of the development of the game, its trailers and deleted levels.

PS5 Technique

When playing the game again on PS5 We were able to notice the critical reduction in game loading times, something that makes the experience more pleasant. Regarding the graphic performance modes it has The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, Quality mode allows you to play at 4K with improved textures and that turns scenes and landscapes—which already looked great in the original version—into quite a spectacle. The changes are noticeable in the macro and in some details, but when playing they are practically imperceptible because, as we already said, the original game already looked good in itself.

Roguelike para fans

‘No Return’ mode The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered It may become the most played section of this new version. It combines ‘roguelike’ elements with a horde mode and asks us to advance in various phases in which we have to run to a specific point or use stealth. ‘Permanent death’ causes tension to be at an all-time high.

Each game begins at a base where we can choose a route through different levels. Weapons and enemy distribution are completely random in each game. As we play we unlock new features, characters and new phases. Like any good roguelike, everything we achieve in a game will be lost when we die.

Although the game asks players to only enter this mode after completing the campaign, it is not really necessary. Players looking for more of a challenge than a story should opt for this way of playing. Of course, you must know the mechanics very well. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered to be able to enjoy it.

Its difficulty also makes it special for that group of players who not only like the story, but also spent the campaign on the highest difficulties.

Class for novice developers

As we mentioned, in this remastering they show the face of those who made the game. We will find comments from Neil Druckman, Banun Idris, Pete Ellis, actors Troy Baker, Laura Bailey and many more

Behind the scenes mode The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered it not only shows the discarded levels. It also allows you to see some designs, videos, listen to the official podcast – for now it is only in English – and allows you to activate comments in the game’s cinematic scenes.

It is very interesting to hear the comments of those who made the game, to understand why they made certain narrative or gameplay decisions and why something was done or not done. In the case of the eliminated levels, they are small but the comments help us learn a little more about the developers’ vision of the game and, above all, learn a little more about the development process of an AAA title.

More for fans

‘Guitar Free Play’ mode makes these beautiful game moments accessible from the menu. We will be able to play various types of guitars and basses with Joel and Ellie and even Gustavo Santaolalla.

In this critical review of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered we will find out what's new about this remastering and if it is worth it for fans.

The vast majority of new collectibles and skins will have to be unlocked by performing different actions in the game, such as completing it on different difficulties or in no return mode. Playthroughs from the PS4 version and trophies can be carried over to the remaster, but it’s exhausting trying to get all the new unlockables.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered

In summary

Although on the surface it seems like a remastering aimed at capitalizing on the name’s recent media fame thanks to the HBO series, The Last of US Part 2 Remastered It is more geared towards players of the previous version than new fans. Its new game modes and graphical improvements refresh the experience and its extras with comments from the developers make this remastering a must-have for those most interested in the world that Ellie inhabits. This is without a doubt the best version of the game.
