The variable refresh rate (VRR) will arrive this week at PS5. As revealed long ago, the long-awaited functionality will be offered via a software update in the coming days. This will remove the tearing and jump frames on TVs and monitors that support HDMI 2.1 and VRR.
The company announced in the Blog de PlayStation that PS5 games already on the market can be optimized for VRR through a patch. this feature will be enabled for future releasesalthough its implementation will depend on the developers.
PlayStation revealed the games that will receive software updates to enable VRR In the next weeks. In the list are titles such as Destiny 2
What is Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)?
Variable refresh rate dynamically synchronizes the screen refresh rate with the graphical output of the PS5. This option has been around for some time on PC and remove the annoying tearinga line that “cuts” the screen when the monitor is not synchronized with the graphic information sent by the computer.
To avoid hardware problems developers locked the frame rate per second. That changed with new-gen consoles like the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, which now have no problem running some games at over 60fps and offer variable refresh rates to keep things smooth.
Two things are required for this feature to work: a compatible console and a monitor or TV with an HDMI 2.1 port also have support for VRR. The latter is important, since having an HDMI 2.1 port does not guarantee the variable refresh rate. Some TV models do not include this option or sometimes require a firmware update to enable it.
How is VRR enabled on the PS5?
To enable variable refresh rate on your PS5 you will need to update the console software in the coming days. Later, in the “Display and video” settings, the VRR option will appear. It is also integrated an option to activate it in unsupported games
The support page mentions that Sony continues to work with TV manufacturers to improve the performance and experience for console users. A few weeks ago, Sony released a firmware update which enables VRR on various models with an HDMI 2.1 port.
