Sony announces a free online multiplayer weekend event in mid-December for players without the PlayStation Plus subscription service.
With December approaching, Sony announces a list of new games that will be available for the PlayStation Plus service for members to enjoy next month. In addition to the new PS Plus titles, the announcement reveals a new free online multiplayer weekend event for non-PlayStation Plus members to enjoy in mid-December.
According to Adam Michel, Sony’s senior content manager for gaming services, the event will allow non-PS Plus members to enjoy the online features of their PS4 and PS5 games for free. PlayStation players will be able to enjoy all the benefits of their online game modes without the PlayStation Plus service. However, it will only work in local time from midnight on Saturday December 19 to December 20 at 11:59 pm.
Non-PS Plus users will not have access to any other services on the PlayStation subscription service and will only have a short period to take full advantage of this event during the winter season. Of course, the event will require players to have a strong internet connection and a PlayStation Network account for it to work. The promo image on the blog has footage from EA’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Grand Theft Auto 5, and FIFA 21 as prime examples.
However, the event does not provide players with access to any PS Plus titles, so they will need to own the games to use its online features. This also means that non-PS Plus users will not have access to the new PS Plus titles that Sony announced for December. The crazy turn-based Worms Rumble, the high-octane open world Just Cause 4 and the online shooter Rocket Arena will be available to PS Plus subscribers.
Sony has hosted free online multiplayer weekend events in the past for the PS4 with similar criteria for players not using the subscription service. The events were also part of an announcement of new PS Plus titles, just like this id. One notable example was August 8-9 when Fall Guys was added to PS Plus that month. This is in line with Sony’s plan for the PS Plus service to include backward compatible PS4 games and cycling on PS5 exclusives, as well as the recent PS5 game Bugsnax, which is part of the November 2020 offering.
When it comes to free online multiplayer weekend events, Sony keeps things the same for the subscription service. Players without him PS Plus service they will have something to look forward to in December before Christmas arrives.
