The upcoming title of Giant Squid, Sea swordis a well -designed union of all the titles on which the studio and the game director Matt Nava worked. Abzû's aquatic wonder, the sense of adventure of the Pathless and the beautiful world of the Daissey desert. Sword of the Sea weaves these influences so skillfully that he has the impression that this atmospheric surfing adventure was the goal throughout.
I had the opportunity to handle with Sword of the Sea and speak with Giant Squid of the new game, the first day of the PlayStation Plustation Plus catalog on August 19.
Surf on sands and sea
The game begins while the player wakes up like the Wraith, a ship that is waiting to be filled, which has the task of bringing the oceans back to the world. Seeming to be the last one who stays alive to do the work, you receive a mystical surfboard and hit the dunes.
The starting area is a large playground where you can get used to the board, make tips and learn to interact with the world. When you zoom in on the desert, you meet different nodes called ocean seeds that allow you to clean the earth and restore parts of the ocean and marine life.
Beyond the pleasant aesthetics, the life of water and the sea has a direct impact on the gameplay. The Wraith is considerably faster on the water, resulting in greater speed for larger jumps and more laps. A certain marine life create new paths, such as floating jellyfish that make superb jump pads and long strands of climbable algae. Looking at the Terraform landscape was a highlight, as is the search for all the secrets on the ground.
“The sea sword is really a question of spiritual magic of surfing,” explains Nava. “It is inspired by my own experiences as snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing throughout my life. When you think of these extreme sports, the first thing that comes to mind is probably high speed and danger. But there is more than the simple rupture of adrenaline. When you surf the waves in the ocean, you are literally on the border between our world and the world seeing the waves, a world beyond our understanding.
The golden triangles known as Tetra populate the world, acting as a currency that you can exchange with mysterious sellers to learn more things, acquire skills and open new paths. Do you want to see everything? You will have to divert the main path to see and allow yourself. Different sellers, triangles and trick attack arenas are hidden worldwide.
Show your tips and feel the ground
Removing elegant movements in the sword of the sea is simple. When you surf, once you jump, you can press X again to make a variety of double jump towers. Once you have acquired advanced tips from the seller, you hold L1 and press Triangle, Square, Circle or X to make seizures, flips and special towers. They score more points, and the combination of seizures and flips in different ways create new tips. Although the timing is a little more delicate, you can give yourself a well -necessary boost and mark high points combos when executed right.
Sword of the Sea constantly keeps the score of the tips you draw and how advanced they are. The hidden attack arenas allow you to put these skills wisely. What is a high slowdown score led? Yet another mystery, we will have to wait to discover.
Although the game takes place in the desert, there are many different objects to grind in addition to the sea and sand. I came across ruins, ceramic tile roofs and useful aquatic life. The Giant Squid team fully takes advantage of the Dualsense Controller haptic to ensure that each surface feels and seems distinct. While I surfaces along the roofs, I could hear the melodic tones of the tiles below and tingling it in my fingers. The sand offers a coarse sensation, and you feel and hear the rush water when you pass on the makeshift highways that the parts of the ocean create.
“The haptic feedback from the DualSense controller reacts differently to each surface so that you can feel it when you cross one to the other,” says Nava. “Combined with special sound effects that play the controller, it gives a very realistic feeling of touching the surfaces you see in the game. We are very excited by the additional layer of details that haptic adds to the surf experience in Sword of the Sea.”
You are free to explore in a given direction, and places that are difficult to reach you generally reward with something employment for the time and the skills necessary to reach them. However, as you explore, you will discover wall paintings and other environmental elements that keep history that is always present. A story of loss and destruction, and try to find out how you settle in everything is an intriguing thread to follow. Especially since at the end of my session, it was clear that an mysterious character followed me. It seemed to be another Wraith, but the one who was the pursuer did not give vibrations of good intentions.
It is easy to compare Sword of the Sea to its predecessors, but the game really looks like an evolution of everything on which the giant Squid team has worked on this point. The sites, the sounds and the game of the game are connected to me with the earth, and I can't wait to jump on the set and see what is really there.
“Our games have a really recognizable and unique art style, and tell atmospheric stories with their daring color and music,” explains Nava. “We start with a feeling, experience and message that we want the player to feel. Really, all our games are all about movement, and how it can connect you with nature and the world in different ways. Sword of the SEA is based on the ideas of all our previous games to create something that is both very giant and an exciting new adventure. ”
