The PlayStation 5 it finally landed in the United States and Mexico, among other territories that were part of the first wave. Now that the consoles are reaching their buyers, and in anticipation of the debut in Europe next week, Sony has updated its support web to clarify some important issues of the PS5. The information now reflects the complete listing of supported audio technologies
The biggest surprise of all, although to some extent, is the appearance of Dolby Atmos. However, it is notable to note that such a standard will not work on PlayStation 5 games; only in video contents (movies or series) through the Blu-ray disc player and Ultra HD Blu-ray. Obviously, Sony specifies that this proposal can only be used on televisions, speakers or headphones compatible with Dolby Atmos. This is a complete compatibility list:
- Dolby Digital (maximum 5.1)
- Dolby Digital Plus (maximum 7.1)
- Dolby TrueHD (maximum 7.1)
- DTS (maximum 5.1)
- DTS-HD High Resolution Audio (máximo 7.1)
- DTS-HD Master Audio (máximo 7.1)
- AAC (maximum 5.1)
- Linear PCM (maximum 7.1)
- Dolby ATMOS and DTS: X available for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray video discs (when the PS5 is connected to a compatible device)
Games stay with 3D Audio
What is the reason why the PS5 does not offer Dolby Atmos in games? Very simple: the console integrates its own audio solution, which has been promoted by Sony since they announced the console in 2019. 3D Audio
Currently, in fact, it is already implemented in games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and, above all, with Demon’s Souls, which has proven to be the best example of 3D Audio capabilities. The situation with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S is very different, since Microsoft preferred to bet on Dolby Atmos instead of creating its own proposal. In the end, each company takes advantage of the resources and technologies they have to offer a set of experiences next-gen.
