Verdansk, as you have learned, is gone. A nuclear explosion wiped out a zombie epidemic that recently corrupted the country. In its cleanup wake, Activision rewound Verdansk to its 1984 version to explore how the events of the Cold War affected this city. Warzone Season Three rises from the ashes and comes with plenty of exciting map updates, including reinvented retro interpretations of iconic locations.
Warzone’s return explosion is just one piece of the Season 3 picture. New Operator Wraith joins the fight – a cold killer featured in the narrative cutscenes surrounding the destruction of Mt. Yamantau. Yamantau is a new snowy multiplayer map that takes place in and around buildings after a devastating avalanche, Sticks and Stones mode returns for a more relaxed MP experience and will challenge your tomahawk throwing accuracy. Diesel is a new 2v2 Gunfight map that doubles as a 6v6 map for tight quarters. Strafe Run’s scorestreak combs the battlefield with aircraft machine gun fire. This is just a sample.
Welcome to Verdansk ’84
Every building, surface and object on the Warzone map has been revisited and reworked to create a new Warzone environment. For starters, it is now spring in Verdansk. Cherry blossoms line the streets and vibrant green flora make the map a vibrant new destination.
Seven existing locations return with new points of interest, including the destroyed airport in modern Verdansk. At Verdansk ’84 the airport is fully furnished, the sun is shining through the windows intact and has an entirely different vibe than before. The airport control tower still stands there, creating a position of power for players who wish to control the area. However, the new layout of the airport allows players additional cover to counter-shoot anyone encamped in the tower.
The Verdansk stadium is still under construction in 1984, with a crane dominating the site. The previously opened dome was completely absent in 1984, creating an open-air battlefield.
We had the chance to discuss three of the most significant changes on the Verdansk map with Miles Leslie, Creative Specialist at Treyarch, and Amos Hodge, Associate Creative Director at Raven Software. Read on to find out what these locations looked like before, how they got updated in Verdansk ’84, and tips for success.
(Northwest on the map)
Gora summit
What it was
Amos Hodge: “… The biggest change is that it used to be the dam. It was a solid wall. Often times you try to get up there and you just can’t because the solid walls are hard to get through. You could go in, but it was a bit of a maze, a bit dark. So it was really hard to get to the top [of the Dam]. “
What is it now
Amos Hodge: “Now there is a truck path [up Gora Summit]. It’s a little steep, but you can get on it, you can drive a truck on it. We also have what I think is the coolest part: the cable cars that go from the top to the buildings below to provide a bit of coverage.
tips for success
Amos Hodge: “[Gora] Summit is really great for their sight lines and snipers. If you get to Summit and climb the rooftops, you can shoot. There are the gondolas going up and down and you can bring people who don’t care to get on and off the gondolas.
(Slightly west of the center of the map)
Airplane factory
What it was
Amos Hodge: “Airplane Factory was one of those places in between. There were these big rusty cylinders standing upright. There were ladders. There were six of these structures. This area was in a way an intermediary place. It was just enough to get through, but it wasn’t really a destination.
What is it now
Amos Hodge: “Now it’s a full destination. There are interiors where people actually put the planes together. “
tips for success
Miles Leslie: “I like to drive a truck outside just to turn people on and come out inside thinking they’re going to kill me. And then I just drive in a cargo truck. And it’s apocalyptic for them.
(Northeast on the map)
Radar network
What it was
Amos Hodge: “There really wasn’t much before! This is one of the coolest new locations because you can see it from anywhere on the map. “
What is it now
Miles Leslie: “For some of the fans who remember the original Black Ops, we had a map called Grid, and it was based right next to the Dugo. It also made an appearance in the Black Ops Cold War campaign, so there is a deep connection and a lot of connection to the Black Ops world, overall.
It was also a real thing used during the Cold War, so now that we step back in time to ’84 it made sense. On top of that, it’s really fun to play. Radar Array is deceptive – you want to land on it immediately, but there’s a feeling of mastery that comes with how you use it, how you perform on it, and how you play with it. I think that’s what the players are going to appreciate. “
tips for success
Amos Hodge: “On Radar Array, I like to wear a secondary launcher [weapon] and dismantle helicopters. This is the ideal point of view. You can see so many helicopters up there and you can lock in with your launcher from quite a long distance. So it’s a great place to dump the helicopters. You can also go up there and [destroy] ground vehicles. “
Miles Leslie: “Want epic moments? Try to jump [Radar Array], skydiving and erasing people. There you go, that’s fantastic.
