Editor THQ Nordic clarifies the details about the possible release window for the long-awaited post-apocalyptic RPG Biomutant from Experiment 101.
Experiment 101’s upcoming action RPG, Biomutant, debuted at Gamescom 2017, when the game’s first trailer revealed the title’s main feline character and open-world setting. The game is the first from the Swedish developer, and the occasional trailers have kept gamers intrigued despite the dim release windows for Biomutant, cancellation rumors, and long silences from Experiment 101.
A financial report from the game’s publisher, THQ Nordic, appeared to reveal that Biomutant could hit stores before the publisher’s fiscal year ends. This meant that the game would be released before March 31, 2021, which would have been a surprise considering that no definitive release dates had been announced. However, THQ Nordic has since clarified that the game’s launch is scheduled for the company’s next financial year, which begins in April 2021.
In a previous statement, THQ Nordic revealed that it regards Biomutant as one of its most important future titles, with CEO Klemens Kreuzer calling it “a major release”. The open world title places players on a post-apocalyptic journey filled with mutated anthropomorphic animals. The protagonist of Biomutant is a fully customizable mammalian warrior, with initial options for gender, body shape and size, skin color and style, coat type, and initial mutation.
Although Biomutant features typical role-playing attributes such as strength, vitality, charisma, intellect, agility, and luck, these numbers will change based on the character’s appearance. For example, a creature with a larger head will have higher intelligence, thus increasing its psionic or mental abilities. As the game progresses, the mutated player character will be able to recode their DNA to adjust the statistics and also update them with the points obtained by leveling up.
For the record: This article previously stated Biomutant is due for release in Q1 2021. THQ Nordic has reached out and clarified that the game is actually slated for its next financial year, which starts in April. https://t.co/43ETgXOhgC

In addition to modifying their furry mutant character through standard RPG stats enhancements, Biomutant players will also be able to impact their abilities and appearance by creating weapons and adding biomechanical body parts such as robotic legs or cybernetic wings. Players can also choose their fighting style, depending heavily on firepower, leaning more towards kung fu-inspired melee techniques or using a combination of both.
The game’s graphics are also partly what has kept interest from waning despite the infrequent Experiment 101 updates on the development of Biomutant. The trailers and screenshots that have been distributed over the years reveal a bright, colorful and detailed world that demands exploration. Hopefully, in 2021, its developer or THQ Nordic will share additional news about the sci-fi RPG. The latest significant information about the game was released in the form of a 10-minute preview in June 2020.
Biomutant is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
