Chronic Mortal Kombat the Movie (2021): An Adaptation Full of Promises?
Mortal Kombat is back in theaters in 2021 and smells like death.
A reboot of the 1995 film
This isn’t the first time the Mortal Kombat franchise has put on their gloves and entered the ring of the 7th art. As early as 1995, the director Paul WS Anderson (Event horizon, but especially the Big Budget Babes series resident Evil) is interested in the saga. The result ? Nostalgic since the 90s know him all too well. Mortal Kombat is an ultra kitsch B series but well meant to know how to stroke fans towards the hair. The cult theme and some over the top sequences are remembered. Mortal Kombat (2021) is a reboot of the 1995 film by Simon McQuoid, a director who cut his teeth in several commercials. It practically erases the past and rewrites history … only on small and large screens. No question about touching video games … and Warner is right to abstain, as the MK community is quick to cause a death for the slightest deviation.
A “new” scenario
The story of this restart revolves around Cole Young, an entirely new character played by Lewis Tan. And yes, we’ll come back to the actor a little later. Cole Young is an underground MMA (mixed martial arts) fighter who is attacked by a mysterious assassin (here Sub-Zero) sent by Shang Tsung himself. Fearing for his family, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade and Major Jax Briggs and then necessarily faces Raiden alongside the other Earth protectors. All of them have a similar birthmark in the shape of a dragon, which is actually an invitation to participate in Mortal Kombat, a tournament between the best fighters from the realms of the earth and the underworld. The fate of the universe is at stake. So yes, the Mortal Kombat version 2021 scenario continues in outline of the 1995 scenario, but it’s not a bad thing. The tournament, as classic as it is in its form, is the ideal context to put together a crazy squad and secure the spectacle with lots of fights … pure Mortal Kombat.
Focus on Lewis Tan aka Cole Young
Lewis Tan gives Cole Young his traits and martial arts in this reboot. The British actor best known for his roles in Deadpool 2, To the wastelands as well as Iron fist and Wu assassinreturns to the Mortal Kombat universe after playing Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat X: Generations, an abandoned web series that is currently in production. A mishap that will only motivate Lewis Tan to take on the role of Cole Young. Because the actor is a big fan of fighting games and therefore Mortal Kombat.
Un roster international
Many players will tell you that the most important thing in a fighting game, beyond the gameplay of course, is the list and therefore the number of fighters. However, what turns out to be quality in a video game can quickly become an insoluble problem for filming. The pain of Street Fighters – L’Ultime Combat with Jean-Claude Van Damme and his massive cast is still alive. Should we focus on quality or quantity? I believe that quality should be a priority. Mortal Kombat by 2021 appears to have cut the pear in half. Cole Young is accompanied by Scorpion, Jax Briggs, Raiden, Kano, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung, Mileena, Kung Lao, Shao Khan, Kabal and Goro. That’s more than a dozen “combatants”. Certain absences (Johnny Cage) might scare the purists, but it’s clear we’re facing a 5-star cast. And to interpret these cult characters, Warner draws from a pool of actors of different nationalities and careers … from Hiroyuki Sanada to Joe Taslim (Jaka in the film) The raid
A search for authenticity
Adapting a license, and beyond that, Mortal Kombat is torn between respecting the original material and wanting to free yourself from it. What’s the point of making a movie when it gets to the heart of games? Mortal Kombat (2021) is looking for authenticity. He does not try to venture off the beaten path, but tries to appropriate this universe by showing a white paw. We have the characters, the tournament, and the imagery to ensure a show worth the name. Better still, we can count on real martial artists to make the change. Joe Taslim, Lewis Tan and Hiroyuki Sanada, to name a few. Then Mortal Kombat offered the services of stunt coordinator Jade Amantea (Alien: Bund, Aquaman, Shazam!) to choreograph the clashes and highlight the almighty power of the fighters. The film promised us deadly combat, truth and therefore blood (and it will really drip) and death in particular. The trailer keeps all of its promises. There will be death. Only for this does the draft put on the gloves.
Mortal Kombat will be released in the United States on April 16, 2021. And France in all of that? At the moment it’s 2021 with no further details.
