Activision is growing to support its largest franchise.
Activision Blizzard The earnings results for the first quarter of fiscal 2021 were announced overnight. The publisher achieved a revenue of 2.28 billion U.S. dollars, exceeding its forecast of 2.02 billion U.S. dollars.
As part of the revenue display, Activision Technology talked about its strategy for this fiscal year and beyond. The company announced that it will expand its scale, with the goal of hiring 2,000 new developers in the next two years.
Activision is doing this, partly to triple the size of certain franchise teams (compared to 2019) by the end of next year. It is understood that Call of Duty is one of them.
This is not particularly surprising, because Activision has seen tremendous growth especially in Call of Duty. Shooting game franchise revenue increased 72% year-on-year, largely due to the popularity of Warzone, Black Ops Cold War sales, and Call of Duty: Mobile.
Activision is now considering applying the same advanced game blueprint, free games and mobile devices to the rest of its franchise.
