In the very first Ratchet & clink Spiel, players can get their hands on RYNO, which stands for “Rip You a New One” – you have to understand, it was the early 2000s. The RYNO is the ultimate weapon and costs an exorbitant amount in Bolts, the game’s currency. As the series progressed, developer Insomniac Games added new RYNOs with new effects.
The RYNOs of past games have always been big guns that deliver a serious blow, but the RYNO 8 in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is something completely different.
[Spoiler warning: This post includes spoilers for the RYNO 8, Rift Apart’s ultimate weapon. There are light image spoilers for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s story.]
Players won’t be able to pick up the RYNO 8 until late in the game’s history and will receive it for free after collecting all of the Spybot collectibles scattered around the world.
The RYNO 8 summons objects from other dimensions, smashes them into the ground and creates a purple shock wave that destroys everything nearby. Some of these objects are from Rift Apart‘s world, like a big dinosaur or a spaceship. But other objects come from other dimensions – dimensions that Sony fans may be familiar with.
When you summon an item, it will launch in the air and fall to the ground. Most items explode on impact, but Easter egg items tend to linger for a moment. Some items only last a second and can be very difficult to see.
After upgrading our RYNO 8 a little, we spent about 45 minutes shooting the portal to the ground. There are small and large items depending on the arena you are in. Here is the list of references we found with the RYNO 8.
Ratchet & Clink (2016)
Ratchet & Clanks 2016 Remake is more of a retelling of the original game than anything else, built to tie in with the duo’s film. The Blargian Snagglebeast – a classic boss from the original Ratchet & clink – appears updated in version 2016. And the RYNO 8 can summon the shiny new Blargian Snagglebeast to destroy your enemies.
Horizon Zero Dawn
There are two creatures out Horizon Zero Dawn that can jump out of the RYNO 8.
Above you can see the Ravager, a smaller fighting machine with cat-like claws.
The Thunderjaw is a much larger fighting machine from Horizon Zero Dawn. It’s the T-Rex equivalent of the series.
Jak and Daxter
The RYNO 8 can summon Jak from Jak and Daxter (albeit the adult version of Like 2 and Like 3). It crashes into the ground and stands around a little before returning to its dimension. Daxter, Jak’s orange, loudmouthed companion, does not appear.
Smart Cooper
Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper range is getting some RYNO 8 Easter eggs. The first is Sly himself jumping out of the portal and hanging out a bit before leaving.
The second is the Sly Cooper Van, which has the brains of Sly’s thief operations (Bentley) and the muscle (Murray) hanging around.
Finally, there is an object that looks like a Bentley statue that falls from the sky and disappears almost instantly.
Sunset Overdrive Sunset
Sunset Overdrive Sunset gets two Easter Egg appearances in Rift Apart. The first is the drink’s mascot, Fizzie, who falls out of the portal for a few seconds. It waves a little and then disappears.
The second Easter egg is a barrel of OverCharge Delirium XT that falls from the sky and disappears in no time.
Song of the deep
Song of the deep, Insomniacs submarine game Metroidvania, only gets one Easter egg. The player-controlled submarine can fall from the sky and nestle in the earth before it explodes.
Unexplored
We’re not entirely sure if these two Easter eggs are actually from Uncharted, but they are probably in connection with Nathan Drake and his treasure hunt. Above is a brown jeep very similar to the one used by Nate, Sully, and Sam that they drive around Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
There is also a fan gun that can fall out of the cracks on the RYNO 8. We think it’s probably a tribute to Victor Sullivan’s propeller plane, the Hog Wild, from the Uncharted games.
These are the references that we were able to pick up after a while with recordings on the ground. We have no doubt that dedicated fans will discover more Easter eggs the longer Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is in the wild.
