Our summer reading assignment is here: We have until September to read Isaac Asimov’s classic Foundation series (or reread it because it’s tight) before the long-running TV adaptation appears on Apple TV Plus. The streamer has released a new trailer for the series that shows the grandeur – and the somewhat fluffy action – of Asimov’s futuristic world.
“In the decades since the Foundation series was first printed, Asimov’s prophetic science fiction work has never been as relevant as it is now,” said showrunner David Goyer (The dark knight
Jared Harris (mad Men) leads the series as Hari Seldon, the creator of psychological history. Guardian of the Galaxy Star Lee Pace will play Brother Day, the current emperor of the galaxy who will fall with his empire, while Lou Llobell will reportedly play Gaal, a math genius who works with Seldon. Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, Cassian Bilton and Alfred Enoch complete the cast. Here is the official summary:
When the revolutionary Dr. Hari Seldon predicts the imminent fall of the empire, he and a group of loyal followers venture into the remotest corners of the galaxy to establish the foundation to rebuild and preserve the future of civilizati on. Furious at Hari’s claims, the ruling Cleons – a long line of Imperial Clones – fear that their grip on the galaxy may diminish as they face the possible reality of losing their legacy forever.
The tone and scope of the trailer are somewhere in between game of Thrones and The wide. Expect more than a comparison dune with that sci-fi bow later this fall. It’s big – and clearly a priority, to help sell the Apple TV Plus to a wider audience.
“It was the greatest science fiction work of all time,” showrunner David Goyer (The dark knight) said in the series spotlight at Apple’s WWDC20 event last June. “If ever there was a company that hoped to improve people’s lives through technology and connectivity, it is Apple. And that’s something Asimov was hoping for. “
