Bridgeton Season 2 starts off quickly — so quickly that it’s easy to guess what details you actually remember from Season 1 when it aired in December 2020. Some of the changes in season 2 are pretty obvious: the Duke of Hastings will not be returning as he is happily married, and is living a life on his country estate. (The Duchess Daphne of Hastings, née Bridgerton, makes an appearance, but breakout star Regé-Jean Page and his character stay “in the country” and never visit.) Instead, this season is a whole new, passionate world starring Anthony Bridgerton at the top, looking for love while trying to ignore how upset he is with Kate Sharma.
In preparation for Friday’s Season 2 premiere, we’ve rounded up all the essential tidbits from Bridgeton Season 1 here to get you up to speed quickly. And for a little more fun, we’ve ranked them (in ascending order) based on how much the season reminds you you need to know it.
[Ed. note: Spoilers abound for season 1 of Bridgerton, as faithful readers might expect.]
9. Colin becomes an international student
Heartbroken from the broken engagement to his would-be lover Marina (more on that below), Colin heads to Greece for an emotional recuperation. This is at the bottom of the list both because it’s not particularly important and because Season 2 updates viewers very quickly when someone in a living room announces that they will be stopping in Albania on their way home. ‘Nuff said.
8. We know who Lady Whistledown is
In the final moments of the first season Bridgeton threw a curveball: We were privy to the show’s biggest secret, the identity of multi-ton gossip lady, Lady Whistledown. It turned out she was none other than Penelope Featherington, whose time on the fringes of the ballrooms was rewarded with gossip. It is unlikely that you have forgotten that gibberish-esque twist, but since the show will remind you of that very quickly, don’t fret too much if you did!
7. Eloise is obsessed with finding out who Lady Whistledown is
While we know Lady Whistledown’s identity, Eloise Bridgerton spent much of Season 1 desperately trying to figure her out. She was so diligent, albeit unsuccessful, that the queen herself asked Eloise to come forward. But when young Bridgerton saw what she thought was Whistledown’s carriage approaching one of the Queen’s spies, she ordered Whistledown to flee (without catching a glimpse of who it was).
Perhaps most importantly, remember this: Eloise isn’t on the hunt just because she’s trying to get the next gossip. She respects Whistledown’s disdain for establishing herself and succeeding as an independent woman.
6. Benedikt is an artificial hoe
Like Eloise, Benedict Bridgerton marches to the beat of his own drummer. By Season 1, he was finally convinced that he was going to follow his heart and pursue art – although for much of the season this mostly boiled down to dating (including seamstress Genevieve Delacroix) and observing affairs (like artist Henry’s). Granville). and his friend). But as Benedict reiterates many times in Season 2, his passion is Arts
5. Where is Marina Thompson?
A late twist in season 1 revealed that Marina had become illegitimate with a man who died in the war. Luckily, his brother Philip Crane finally came to set things right by marrying her and saving her from what would have been a serious scandal in Regency times. Colin had broken off their engagement after Lady Whistledown – who you will remember, Penelope Feathering ton – blew up Marina’s situation. It’s moderately important because it’s something you need to know for a number of other stories, but not so much for Marinas. However, it speaks volumes about Penelope.
4. The King of England is having a hard time
Behind her wigs and opulence, the queen hides that the king appears to be suffering from dementia, making him prone to confusion and outbursts of anger. Not much stands out, but it’s important to remember that everything the Queen does is to protect the King’s place (and hers) in society.
3. The Featheringtons lost everything
After rigging a boxing match, Lord Featherington died, apparently murdered by his bookies, who also took their money back. Since the Featheringtons only had daughters, the estate passed to another unnamed man in the family.
2. Anthony is a Capital R rake
In Season 1, Anthony Bridgerton was having an affair with an opera singer with whom he was passionately in love, though their class differences made the romance hopeless.
She called his bluff at the end of season one, telling him he was “lost” and that she wasn’t going to let him “go under.” [her] drive too.” She reminded him that there are men in her life who don’t need her to dress up as something she’s not to make her “respectable.” As a result, Anthony decided he was ready , “and without delay to explain” his intentions to a viscountess. But because he was burned by the opera singer, he goes into the arrangement somewhat hopelessly: “I have finally found the difficulty of love itself. Removing it from all romantic relationships will make me all the better for it.”
It’s ranked here because while Anthony is the protagonist of season two, his heartbreak over his old relationship is relatively forgotten (but vital!).
1. There was a sporting act
Will Mondrich, boxer and friend of the Duke of Hastings, was challenged by Lord Featherington to a fight (the one from a few blurbs ago) that would prove lucrative for both of them. While his decision to throw the fight angered the Duke, the money meant Will could retire from boxing and settle down with his wife Alice and find new ways to support himself.
While this plot isn’t crucial to the first episode of the season, it’s the most cryptically hinted at and clearly plays a big part in how Will behaves in Season 2.
