Given the immense critical and commercial success of Matt Reeves’ film, The Batman 2 is under construction. The director even signed a major deal with Warner Bros. to exploit the Dark Knight universe, among other things.
Warner Bros. doesn’t want to let Matt Reeves go so easily and will spend big bucks to keep him. A huge contract now binds them as the director began work on The Batman 2.
The Batman 2 and many other projects
Talented filmmakers don’t walk the streets and can quickly go elsewhere if they feel like they’re no longer collaborating with production studios like Warner Bros. We think especially of Christopher Nolan, who has joined Universal Pictures for Oppenheimer and his future films has gone. And it’s even worse when a company decides to cancel a feature film like Batgirl.
But that’s not going to happen to Matt Reeves, at least not now, who started writing The Batman 2 with Mattson Tomlin. He also works with Dylan Clark, his producing partner on the Planet of the Apes trilogy. Robert Pattinson, he keeps his Dark Knight cloak and we hope to see Zoe Kravitz again in Catwoman. This apparent sequel, which saw the previous installment gross over $770 million, is just the tip of the iceberg.
As a matter of fact, Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. are tied to a multi-year deal as revealed by meeting. This is the first director to receive such treatment after the change of direction. Well, at the same time, nothing surprising given The Batman’s performance, both commercially and critically. An exclusive relationship in which any project Reeves does with his company 6th & Idaho must be given priority to Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Pictures Group – Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, Warner Animation Group and DC Films have first look rights to Matt Reeve’s work as a writer, director and/or producer.
A dream for Matt Reeves, a new image for Warner
“Making this iconic studio my home is a dream. I’m really looking forward to working with Mike, Pam and Channing and our teams to bring compelling stories to the big and small screen. » Matt Reeves said in a statement.
For Michael De Luca, one of Warner Discovery’s CEOs, it’s important to allow space and create the right conditions to keep a talent like Matt Reeves.
We want to create an atmosphere where all of these directors can excel, get their jobs done, and stay with us once they become part of the Warner family. It was very important to us to keep Matt and create a home for him to do other projects in the Batman universe but also other original things..
With this agreement, Warner Bros. is also making a statement: the studio wants to become a reference from the past by focusing in particular on cinema and not on a SVOD platform.
Carte blanche… or almost!
The Batman 2 and the series about the penguin are validated. But despite Warner’s seduction campaign, there is one topic that is annoying. It is the animated series Batman: The Caped Crusader, a spiritual sequel to the cult series Batman: The Animated Series, which was canceled without explanation from HBO Max. We have to keep our fingers crossed that it doesn’t end in a total cancellation.
