The NPD Group released its August 2022 report covering U.S. video game hardware, software and accessories sales.
Total video game industry spending fell 5% year over year to $4.1 billion, according to NPD. Year-to-date spending was $34.6 billion, down 9% year over year.
For August, hardware Sales rose 14% year over year to $375 million, helped by improved supplies of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox line of consoles. Year-to-date hardware spending fell 4% to $2.9 billion.
The PS5 was the best-selling console in August in terms of unit sales and dollar sales. Year-to-date, the Switch has sold the most, while the PlayStation 5 leads the market in dollar sales. Both the PS5 and Xbox series experienced double-digit year-over-year growth, as both consoles did last month.

Saints Row (2022) debuted on the August bestseller list, while Marvel’s Spider-Man jumped to third. It’s also the bestseller tracking Steam games this month.
Elden Ring dropped to No. 4, but is still the best-selling game of the year. Last month’s first-place MultiVersus took fifth place.

Accessories It fell 18% year over year to $138 million for the month. Year-to-date, spending fell 14% year over year to $1.4 billion. The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller Midnight Black is once again the best-selling accessory. The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller remains the best-selling accessory so far this year.
