The first time I landed a boardslide on my skateboard was one of the most rewarding moments of my entire (albeit short-lived) sports career. I was 11, still learning to throw myself in the air, and didn’t even know how to approach a railing about half my height. Skateboarding in general has a steep learning curve. But there’s euphoria in getting comfortable enough to finally ollie onto a rail, get it just right, slide all the way over it, and then roll away.
To play Session: Skate Sim brought me back to that first moment of stepping onto a board; The controls are unlike any skateboarding game I’ve played before, and the act of moving around required my brain to rewire and learn something entirely new. And just like real skateboarding, it took practice but became more natural over time. I learned to push and olie; learned the basics like shove-its and kickflips (something I never could in real life); figured out how to manipulate the board to do what I wanted.
What initially seemed impossible – completing an entire session as if I were filming a real skate video segment – eventually became one of the most rewarding moments of my video game career. The controls became more natural and I could spin down a flight of stairs or switch a hubba 5-0 with relative ease.
Over the past few years, I’ve put about 100 hours into the game as an Early Access title and collected a few tips and tricks to make every newcomer feel comfortable on their board. With Session: Skate Sim officially launches today on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Take the time to learn
As mentioned above, the controls aren’t like anything you’ve experienced before. Things may feel daunting at first, but soon you will realize how much control you have. The game claims to be a simulator, and controlling each foot with their respective joysticks sure makes it one. Find a stairway or ledge, set your marker so you can keep respawning, and practice – soon the controls will become very simple.
Despite the many hours I’ve put in, I still learn every time I play. With the game featuring brand new controls for transition skating and lip tricks, I see myself learning something I could never do on a real board.
Master your favorite trick
As with most pros, it helps to figure out what tricks you enjoy the most and master them; it builds confidence and also gives you a quick way out if you freeze in the middle of a line. If there’s a trick you want to land but don’t know exactly how to do it, Session: Skate Sim offers a great trick guide that shows you how to complete almost anything you want to learn.
Look everywhere to skate
Session: Skate Sim has created a truly immersive world with real-world spots from major cities that have been featured in skate videos across generations. You can skate the Pyramid Ledges in New York, FDR Park in Philadelphia, or the newly added Pier 7 at the Embarcadero in San Francisco, and so much more. Aside from the locations you might recognize, the virtual world is entirely skateable, creating near-limitless filming opportunities if you’re creative enough. Speaking of…
