I’ve talked about it in detail Callisto AgreementThe so-called “killer dessert”. Similar to the game’s predecessor, Dead Space, Callisto Protocol will be delighted to see your protagonist – doomed pilot Jacob Lee – dismembered at every available opportunity.
In fact, Geln Schofield (co-creator of Dead Space and head of Striking Distance Studios) seems more eager to punish players who fail to keep Jacob alive. Or reward them for dying, if you want to look at it that way. Given that the game even gives you the achievement to find every way to die in the game, it’s clear that the developers meant to really engage you with all these brutal end points in the prisoner’s life.
The game is difficult. So death happens a lot; you really have to learn how to fight, how to avoid threats, how to avoid environmental hazards, how to emerge from this isolated icy prison. So all the deaths are just right and there is actually a good intention behind it. “Look, you’re going to die,” Mark James, Schofield’s secondhand and CTO of Striking Distance, told me in an interview. “So we can also entertain you when you die, right?”
Initially, I thought it might just be PR rhetoric – amplifying a feature that exists but doesn’t make much sense in the actual game itself. I was wrong. After about 60 minutes in the game (you can read my full preview of The Callisto Protocol at the link), I died in seven distinct ways – more than once every 10 minutes. I didn’t even want to die. That just happened. I bet if I tried to find more they would be there.
So, to celebrate this obsession with all things creepy, I’ve listed each of the anachronistic endings for you to read. start.
Murder Dessert 1: Tentacles Pull Your Eyes Out
Early in the level, I came face-to-face with one of our mutant prisoner friends. I didn’t dodge one of its attacks in time and it grabbed me – but since I had damaged it, it had started to evolve. It means tentacles. The tentacles found Jacob’s face and entered his eye sockets. You can imagine what will happen next.
Murder Dessert 2: Face Squeezed by Fist
One of the enemies in the game is a particularly angry bruiser – a large, brutish-type enemy. You know archetypes. This absolute heifer robbed me of my health in one blow, more than I thought, and then took Jacob’s face with one hand and pulped his skull with the other. At one point, you can almost see the bone collapse. Well.

Next, a more swift enemy. Again, you know the horror metaphor; this one is softer, sure, but also leaner, faster, and meaner. After I was run over by the aforementioned savage, the man swooped at me. Unbalanced and without any health, a clean blow knocks Jacob’s face out all over the place. You’ll see it slide a bit before the screen goes black.

The only things in my notes are “the whole head fell off” and “basically took off the gloves”. Here’s what you need to know.
Murder Dessert 5: Broken Neck
One of the alien mutants who can hide themselves is responsible for this. I thought I had cleared a room of all threats and foolishly went to operate a lever. Stupid mistake – this thing fell behind me and broke my neck like I was a chick. His voice was low and sharp, as if he could feel it in his own bones.
Murder Dessert 6: Arms Ripped Off
Pretty sure I’ve seen this in another game before, but here’s a good reference. One of the skinny and nasty enemies overcame me as I tried to duck aside, so it went through my defenses and ripped my exposed arms out. It looked like it was going to beat me before the screen was cut off.
Murder Dessert 7: Smash into a Turbine
This is exactly what it says on the tin. At one point, we were sliding down a sluice (it’s a Glen Schofield game, after all) and I purposely lured Jacob into a sharp, jagged block of iron sticking out of the ground. As expected, his body was torn in half in the mud of blood and guts.This is the end of my demo, leaving a charming Taste it in my mouth.
