If you want to set up a home cinema, you need a projector. However, installation under the ceiling is not for everyone and not possible in every room without any problems. In addition, it also requires a lot of effort when it comes to cable routing. An alternative here are ultra-short-distance projectors, also known as UST projectors.
What are ultra short throw projectors?
These are projectors that have a special wide-angle lens on the top and therefore only have to be a few centimeters away from the wall in order to project a large image onto it. Current devices in this category offer a resolution of 4K and screen areas of more than 100 inches. In most cases, these are laser projectors, as an LED projector lens is not able to display a beautiful image at such a short distance. The UST projectors are also referred to as laser TVs.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of UST projectors compared to normal projectors and televisions?
Ultra-short-throw projectors have the advantage over televisions that they are portable and can easily be taken with you to be used elsewhere. This is not so easy to do with televisions. In addition, picture sizes beyond 80 inches are the exception with conventional televisions; with UST projectors, on the other hand, up to 130 inches are possible.
Compared to conventional projectors, these devices also have the portability advantage – they do not have to be attached anywhere. The image quality differs only marginally depending on the model. Otherwise, ultra-short-throw projectors have the same advantages and disadvantages over televisions as conventional projectors.
When buying ultra-short-distance projectors, you should pay attention to the conditions under which the device should be set up in your home, what resolution you want and what special features – such as the operating system or WLAN connection – your projector should have so that you can make the right purchase decision .
A comparison of popular ultra-short-throw projectors
In the following, we will introduce you to popular ultra-short-distance projectors and compare them with each other.
LG CineBeam
LG currently offers two different projectors under the name CineBeam, which have the model names HU715QW and HU915QE. The differences here are in brightness, image size and price. The cheaper HU715QW model costs 3,299 dollars, but is “only” 2500 ANSI lumens bright and offers an image size of up to 120 inches. The HU915QE model, which is more expensive at 5,999 dollars, has 3,700 ANSI lumens and offers an image size of up to 130 inches.
Otherwise the devices do not differ significantly. The resolution is 4K each, there are 3 HDMI ports with 4K and 60 Hertz, two USB-A ports and an Ethernet connection as well as support for WLAN. HDR10 and Dynamic Tone Mapping are supported, which means that the picture quality is excellent even in bright surroundings. With a wall distance of only 18.3 centimeters, 120 inches are projected. Thanks to webOS 6.0, smart TV features such as streaming apps are also available.
XGIMI Aura
XGIMI offers a cheaper alternative with 4K resolution and up to 120 inch image size with the Aura projector for only 2,499 dollars. The projector, which according to the manufacturer is particularly well suited for a television-like experience during the day, has a brightness of up to 2,400 ANSI lumens and requires a distance of around 30 centimeters from the wall.
The manufacturer also advertises a special image engine, HDR10, an 8-point image correction against distortion and support for Android TV so that you can also use streaming apps and games on the projector. Even the display of 3D content is supported. The device comes with three HDMI ports (one supports ARC), three USB-A ports and a LAN port. WLAN is of course also supported.
Samsung The Premiere
Similar to LG, Samsung has two UST projector models under the name The Premiere: LSP9T and LSP7T. The cheaper model (LSP7T) at 2,539 dollars offers a luminosity of up to 2,200 ANSI lumens, while the more expensive model at 4,819 dollars has up to 2,800 ANSI lumens. In addition, the picture on the more expensive model is between 100 and 130 inches, a full 10 inches larger than on the smaller brother. The projectors do not differ in the remaining specifications.
The resolution of both models is 4K, triple laser technology and HDR10 as well as several modes that are supposed to significantly improve the image display are also on board. Tizen is integrated as a smart TV operating system.
HiSense 100L5F-B12
For 2,999 dollars, HiSense offers the 100L5F-B12 with a screen diagonal of up to 100 inches and a luminance of 2,700 ANSI lumens. According to the manufacturer, the color spectrum exceeds the Rec.709 standard for 4K color areas, which means that colors should be displayed particularly accurately.
As with all projectors in the list, there is also support for HDR10 with smooth movements. The sound system even supports Dolby Atmos for room-filling sound. The in-house operating system VIDAAU also offers you access to any apps and streaming services that you could also get on a smart TV. WLAN, Bluetooth as well as HDMI (4x) and USB A (2x) are also on board.
Cheap alternatives: XGIMI Halo+ and Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro
If you don’t want to buy a top projector for several thousand dollars right away, you can also opt for a cheaper model to enter the world of projectors. You can get the Xiaomi Smart Projector 2 Pro or the XGIMI Halo+ for around 800 dollars each. These are portable projectors, but they are not ultra-short-distance projectors in the classic sense.
Both models are between 900 and 1,300 ANSI lumens bright, have a resolution of up to 4K and deliver a projection size between 60 and 100 inches. The devices each come with corresponding remote controls and can be controlled via Google Assistant.
