The huge success of Avatar 2: Way of Water is once again turning heads. As reported by Reuters, among others, the film has now grossed $2 billion at the worldwide box office. There are officially only five films that were more successful.

What else makes success special?
The first peculiarity is obvious. Just five weeks have passed since the release on December 16, 2022. For comparison, the first Avatar was released in theaters from December 18, 2009 to August 12, 2010 and grossed $2.74 billion worldwide over that period.
The second special feature is that three of the six highest-grossing films of all time now come from director James Cameron. In addition to Avatar 2, these are the historical drama Titanic from 1997 and the first Avatar film from 2009. Since Cameron has three more Avatar films in the pipeline, we can be curious how the list of the highest grossing films of all time will develop in the next few years developed.
