There was a clear star at tonight’s Unpacked event: Samsung’s new Galaxy S23 and its two big siblings in the form of the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra.
What exactly Samsung has presented to us can be found in the following article in all details: Specs, pictures, release dates and of course prices, if known.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
It starts with the smartphone that is doing the most this year. And with the camera, the wheat is separated from the chaff: The S23 Ultra is equipped with a whole range of camera features that the other models do not offer.
For example, there is the new 200 MP wide-angle sensor, which offers the right lighting and resolution in every situation thanks to adaptive binning. In darker environments, 16 pixels should be combined into one, in brighter environments groups of four pixels are sufficient.
Thanks to Super HDR, more accurate colors should also be possible with both the front and rear cameras over a wider range of light and dark environments.
Pixel binning should also help with autofocus. Super Quad is the name of the feature that uses the four pixels binned together to find the right focus.
The new sensor should also be used for videos. Samsung promises up to 8K resolution at 30 FPS. There are also new features for professional creators such as Pro Video Mode, Clean Preview and Auto Lens Switching.
The S23 Ultra should really shine when taking pictures at night. The new sensor combined with software improvements and a dedicated AI camera algorithm should ensure better colors and less noise in night shots. Photos should also benefit from the feature called nightography.
In order to show the power behind the new camera, Samsung decided on a very direct way: According to Samsung, the entire unpacked event was filmed with the camera of the S23 Ultra
The Ultra also differs in design from the other two models. The angular look is still reminiscent of the now-retired Note series, as is the S Pen that ships with the S23 Ultra. As usual, it finds its place inside the smartphone.
Like the other models, there is also a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 under the hood. The eight-core CPU is also being used in European smartphones from Samsung for the first time. With the chip, Samsung speaks of an increase in CPU performance of 34 percent and GPU performance of 41 percent. The Ultra is joined by either 256 or 512 GB of storage and 8 or 12 GB of RAM, depending on your choice.
A 6.8-inch QHD+ display is used for the display and, just like last year, a 5,000 mAh battery is installed. The cell phones of the S23 series are also the first cell phones with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which is said to withstand falls from 2 meters onto asphalt or 1 meter onto concrete. Samsung specifies the brightness as 1750 nits for all models.
More robust than iPhone, Pixel and Co.
Samsung Galaxy S23 gets a unique feature
The price of the S23 Ultra has baked. Depending on the model, Samsung would like you to pay between 1,400 and 1,580 dollars for this in Europey.
Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus
The jumps in the S23 and S23 Plus are less drastic. Both come in a rounder design, but also do without the camera island of the S22.
The camera apparently uses the same 50 MP wide-angle camera as last year, plus a 12 MP ultra wide-angle and a 10 MP telephoto lens. The upgrade to a 12 MP front camera is new.
The processor is also new in the smaller models. The eight-core from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, is also used here.
Depending on the equipment, between 950 and 1010 dollars are due for the basic model, with the plus Samsung demands between 1200 and 1320 dollars. The smartphones and the S23 Ultra are scheduled to be released on February 17th.
Positive for everyone who wants to use their smartphone for several years: Samsung promises operating system updates for at least 4 years and security updates for another 5 years for the S23 series.
In addition to the hardware, there were of course also a few software announcements. The most important of these was the announcement of OneUI 5.1. The latest version is already installed on the new S23 models at the time of release and is to follow later for other Samsung cell phones as well.
New features include additional options for customizing your own lock screen and Smart Suggestions, which are intended to recommend the right app in every situation. Furthermore, a maintenance mode
