Do you think Starlink is too expensive? Amazon may have a solution for you with satellite internet.
Elon Musk’s Starlink service currently offers a subscription for 50 dollars a month and equipment that totals 637 dollars. A large sum that clearly prevents the average user from benefiting from it. Amazon is aware of the problem and also wants to offer a satellite internet service, but at a cheaper price. How about?
Amazon and satellite internet
Amazon has unveiled a range of customer terminals that connect to its high-speed satellite network, what’s the name of it? Project Kuiper. Especially with a blog entryAmazon claims its designs are “Smaller, cheaper and more efficient” than what the competition offers. So there are several terminals/antennas. The first device is the “normal” client terminal. This is supplied with a diagonal of 11 inches (27 centimeters) and a thickness of 1 inch (2.54 cm ) described weight of 2.2 kg In terms of performance and connectivity, Amazon announces a maximum speed of 400 Mbit / s with a production cost that could rise to 400 dollars.
Several terminals for all applications
There is also an even more compact terminal that weighs just one pound (0.500 grams) and measures just 7 inches (17 cm) diagonally. This is the cheapest device and can deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps. And because it also needed one, Amazon presented its commercial terminal for large companies. It is the largest and most powerful of the three terminals, measuring 19 inches (48 cm) with a connection that can reach up to 1 Gb/s.
Amazon is expected to launch its first batch of satellites in the first half of 2024 and enable internet service for its first customers later that year. Rajeev Badyal, VP of Technology at Amazon for Project Kuiper says:
Our goal with Project Kuiper is not only to connect unserved and underserved communities, but to inspire them with the quality, reliability and value of their service..
