is called the antipodes place opposite to your position on the planet. In other words: the place where you would appear if you made a perfectly vertical hole from where you are and passed through the center of the Earth (somehow avoiding being burned by the liquid metal of its core).
It’s more of a curiosity that was solved with calculations and a map of the world, but now we have it at our fingertips thanks to an interactive map and GPS on our iPhone. We are going to see how to know where we would appear if we crossed the planet on the completely opposite side.
From where you are to the opposite pole with just one touch
All you have to do is open your favorite browser on the iPhone and access Antipodes Map, a website with the perfect interface to discover these antipodes. There you will find two maps, an upper one in which you can choose a location and a lower one in which the antipodes will be displayed.
The quickest way is to click the pin icon so the web loads your exact location on the map above and you can check the antipodes on the one below. To do this, iOS will ask you for permission to grant location to this website. Alternately you can write a city, postcode or full address if you want to be specific.
In my specific case, the antipodes of my home are near the Chatham Islands in New Zealand. It’s not the best place to spawn, the idea is not to drown. Maybe you are luckier.
By the way, this term should not be confused with the name of the Antipodes Islands, so named because their English discoverers believed that they were at the exact antipodes of the United Kingdom. They weren’t right either because they are actually at the antipodes of northern France, with this map they might have looked for another name.
