There are two fundamental factors that influence the idea of turn off mobile data at home and Wi-Fi is disabled outside. The first saves us from having to accidentally spend data and in cases like mine where I don’t have an unlimited rate, it’s crucial. On the other hand, having Wi-Fi turned on outside the home can be dangerous.
So yes, the best is exchange from one connection to another. And if it’s possible to do it without lifting a finger, so much the better. For this, I have a tip which is really not an unusual invention, but which many probably do not know and I think it might interest you.
iPhone can run this automation, although it needs to be configured
The “Shortcuts” iOS app has huge potential and the proof is that we can do almost anything with it. But it also involves complexity. Fortunately, for this action We won’t have to do anything complicated.
It’s basically about creating automation that turn on Wi-Fi when you get home and turn off mobile data at the same time. Identical situation, but in reverse, it is configurable. To do this, you just need to follow these steps which, although you see that they are numerous, are actually very simple:
- Make sure iPhone location is turned on. It’s necessary for this action and you can go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location.
- Now open the “Shortcuts” app on your iPhone and Go to the “Automation” tab.
- Tap the “+” icon in the top right and click “Get There” (if it doesn’t appear as a suggestion, use the text box to search for it).
- In “Location,” select your home location. If you are now at home, you will be able to choose “Current Location”.
- Be sure that The “Any time” and “Run immediately” options are checked and click “Next”.
- Now click on “New Empty Automation” then “Add Action”.
- In the search engine, type “Wifi” (without the quotes) and choose the “Set Wi-Fi network” option.
- Make sure the chosen action says “Turn on Wi-Fi.” Otherwise, click “Disable” to change modes.
- Use the search engine again and this time type “Mobile data” to choose the “Set mobile data” option.
- Unlike the previous case, make sure the action is set to “Turn off mobile data” and if not, click “Enable” to change it.
- Tap “OK” at the top of the screen.
Once this is done, you will have created an automation that will activate Wi-Fi when the iPhone detects that you arrive home and deactivate the data. Now all that’s left is repeat the process in reverse. In other words, follow the same steps, but this time leaving the “Mobile data” option on “Enable” and the “Wi-Fi” option on “Disable”.
I have to say that You can also choose other Wi-Fi locations that you visit frequently and whose network you have already registered on the iPhone. Let’s take for example your workplace or the home of a family member or friend.
You can also create manual shortcuts (or attach them to automation)
Although automation is generally more convenient because you don’t have to do anything at all, it is also true that may fail if the location is not precise enough. This can happen if you live on a block and the iPhone automatically detects that you’re home when you’re actually at the door.
To prevent mobile data from being disabled before the account, or in addition to automation, you can also create two shortcuts that can be executed with one touch and this will have identical consequences. To do this, we suggest you download them directly with the links that we leave below or, if you prefer, create them yourself since the process is similar to the final part of the automation.

Shortcuts for hotkeys and mixing with automation
To activate these shortcuts you must open the application and click on them and they will be executed, although There is a faster way to access it, by adding the “Shortcuts” widget. on your home screen (or any other). You just have to go to the screen where you want to add it, hold your finger on any part where there are no icons, press the “+” button and search for “Shortcuts” widgets.
Likewise, say that The entire process of creating automations can be done faster If you have already created these shortcuts, you will see that when creating the automation you are allowed to add a shortcut so you don’t have to configure it again.
In short, what both shortcuts and automations mean is completely forget about connections knowing that the ones I need will always be activated at all times and safely on the other side.
