Regardless of what you think of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad: The film was a huge hit at least at the box office! With a budget of 175 million US dollars, the ensemble consisting of Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Co. was able to gross almost 750 million worldwide.
And this despite the fact that critics of Suicide Squad were anything but enthusiastic and viewers themselves also rated it rather cautiously. This is how the DC film comes along Rotten Tomatoes to an average score of 26 or 58 percent and at Metacritic to 40 to 59 percent.
Not David Ayer’s Suicide Squad
Director David Ayer has never made it a secret The theatrical version of Suicide Squad definitely didn’t live up to his vision
Ayer himself blames the failure of the dismal Batman v Superman and the success of Deadpool for the fact that Warner Bros. and DC cold feet
Okay, we’re turning David Ayer’s dark, meaty movie into a damn comedy!– we already reported about it.
The Suicide Squad Director’s Cut is finally dead
That’s why the director (most likely driven by the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement for Justice League) lobbied loudly to be allowed to complete the director’s cut of Suicide Squad. At least until now. Because David Ayer has, according to posts that have now been deleted X (via Comicbook) threw in the towel.
Ayer announced I’m done with DC
, prompting a fan to ask about the director’s cut of Suicide. To which the filmmaker replied: No. I’m done with it. I’m very sad about that. After crying once, you’ll feel better. I feel better. It’s a wound that needs to heal.
When asked if anything had improved under James Gunn regarding a possible situation, Ayer continued: Nothing about this situation feels good. The studio has no interest in the release. It’s time to run and don’t look back. […] I don’t need to walk around like a beggar. I will take better care of myself in the future.

Suicide Squad – Official trailer for the DC movie
DC is setting off for new shores
Of course, it’s impossible to say whether the director’s cut of Suicide Squad would have actually made a better film. With DC now looking to go in a new direction under James Gunn, it’s not all that surprising that David Ayer’s ambitions for the film are no longer coming to fruition.
It is probably also a question of cost. The Snyder Cut of Justice League, for example, cost an additional $70 million. Since Warner Bros. has recently been plagued by numerous superhero flops (such as Aquaman 2 or Blue Beetle), Warner Bros. would rather look to the future than to the past.
