Whether you like the idea or not, David Benioff and DB Weiss are back. The famous duo has adapted a series of science fiction novels which is coming soon to Netflix. Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Chinese writer Cixin Liu is better known as The Three-Body Problem, a title taken from the first of the trilogy’s three novels.
Instead of the intrigues of the throne room and dragons, this time around, the Game of Thrones showrunners are focusing on a land overshadowed by the threat of invasion from an alien civilization. What does the mass death of the world’s best scientists have to do with a fateful decision made by an astrophysicist and how will these events affect the future of humanity?
Alongside Benioff and Weiss, Alexander Woo is co-creator of the new series, which will be directed by Derek Tsang.
What is the plot of Netflix’s new epic, and when will it be available on the service? Here is all the key information about the upcoming adaptation of Cixin Liu’s trilogy.

3 Body Problem consists of 8 episodes.
What is the plot of 3 Body Problem?
The story begins in China in the 1960s, during the Cultural Revolution. A young astrophysicist, Ye Wenjie, witnesses her father’s execution. Years later, disillusioned with humanity, she makes a discovery that could change the destiny of all humanity: there is intelligent life in space. However, the beings with whom the scientist comes into contact are looking for a planet to colonize.
Created by writer Cixin Liu, the series includes the novels The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death’s End. The plot spans decades as humanity prepares for the inevitable invasion, and time jumps are not uncommon.
It’s unclear if Season 1 of the Netflix series is a film adaptation of the first volume or if it depicts the events of the entire trilogy, but we suspect there’s more to come.

However, adapting the story was undoubtedly a challenge, especially since the creators wanted to make it accessible to a wide audience.
As director Derek Tsang said (via Netflix):
The novel is written in Chinese, and there are mostly Chinese characters on the page. It makes sense that because we’re tailoring the story to our global audience, we’ve expanded the scope and have more characters from around the world. Author Cixin Liu gave us her blessing, and I think David, Dan, and Alex did a great job of retaining what are essentially the best elements of the novel while making it a much more global and international story.
Alexandre Woo added:
The experience of watching a TV series is different from that of watching a feature film, [which] is so different from the experience of reading a novel. What we hope to do is bring to the screen the experience – if not necessarily the exact details – of the novel. What has remained, we hope, is the feeling of wonder and the feeling of magnitude, of scale, where the problems are no longer just those of an individual or even a nation, but of a whole species.
