The sequel to the well-received underwater survival game Subnautica will be a live service game with multiplayer and single player adventures. The news was revealed by indie developer Kraft on and met with mixed responses online due to the gaming aspect of the service. The game invites players to explore the ocean world in stunning stylized graphics and is powered by Unreal Engine 5. As mentioned earlier, the game can be played single-player or you can team up with others in co-op mode. More will likely be revealed about Subnautica 2 soon.
Update: Games official blog expands on this with the following clarifications:
- Early Access isn’t slated for a 2024 release, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year!
- As for “Games-as-a-Service,” we simply plan to continuously update the game for many years to come, just like the previous two Subnautica games. Consider our extended early access update model. No season passes. No battle passes. There is no subscription.
- The game is not focused on multiplayer. Co-op will be a completely optional way to play the game. You will be able to enjoy the game as a single player.
