Ubisoft has with Rainbow Six SMOL
released a surprising new offshoot of its long-standing tactical shooter series that differs from its predecessors in many ways.
The mobile game, available exclusively to Netflix subscribers, marks an unusual step in the development of the series – or one could say charitably, it offers a fresh perspective on the Rainbow Six universe.
Rainbow Six is breaking new ground
What kind of game is this? With an iso perspective and a cartoon-like style, Rainbow Six SMOL breaks with tradition and presents itself as a roguelite shooter for your mobile devices. Unlike previous installments in the series, which are known for their tactical depth and realistic portrayal, SMOL is intended to appeal to a broader audience by offering a “small, fun, crazy” twist on the Tom Clancy universe.

Ubisoft describes the game as one Mixture of action and strategy, in which you control a group of R6 operators carrying out various missions around the globe. Each operator has their own weapons, bonuses and unique abilities, so you’ll need to put together the perfect team for each mission.
Rainbow Six SMOL stands out highly destructible environments that allow you to approach missions in different ways – either loudly and with brute force or quietly and deliberately. You already know this from Rainbow Six Siege.
The Roguelite-Element means that the death of an operator results in their permanent loss, increasing the risk in each mission. However, you can collect experience points and credits through successfully completing missions in order to unlock new upgrades and weapons for your operators and thus protect them from premature death if possible.
The game is only available to existing Netflix subscribers at no additional cost – you can download it in the Netflix mobile app.
Anyway: But the game also offers a fully-fledged gaming experience without an in-game shop, advertising and similar annoyances that often spoil the fun, especially with free2play games in the mobile sector.
