While they are still busy with their latest major mission, the recent order for Helldivers 2 has once again made the Eagle 500KG bomb a focus of criticism. Why? Because it is still almost incapable of killing anything outside the center of the blast.
Hey, if nothing else, now we’re talking about that strategy change people have been wanting to make, which could mean Arrowhead is finally collecting data to help make that happen. Also, it means there’s a limited amount of discussion about the idea of splitting the enemy army in two and whether or not that’s a tactic that would drive Sun Tzu crazy.

Arrowhead has recently been frequently asking players to kill a bunch of enemies using different weapons, with a recent example being a personal order that required players to kill 200 enemies using a 500KG bomb. Obviously, you don’t have to do all of these orders, as all they do is give you a few extra medals for your efforts, but those who aren’t happy with this have found that the device still doesn’t meet their requirements.
As players said back in April, this thing is supposed to provide a damage radius that matches its nature as a giant bomb that creates a huge explosion. The problem is that it only seems to be able to deal significant damage to a relatively small area at the center of the blast, so it seems to be more like a precision missile than a bomb to some players.
While there is some debate as to the reasons for this, such as the bombs possibly having a cone of effect and being more hindered by terrain, after some amateur testing following the latest order, there still seems to be no consensus. Well, other than players feeling that they don’t consistently get enough rewards, even though the bombs are still very effective at killing Hellstalkers that don’t dodge quickly.
“Currently the 500kg missile is only useful for destroying buildings and giants, and may not even be reliable for the latter,” one player wrote. “I don’t understand why it should be slower than Orbital Precision Strike (OPS), since currently OPS does most things better, even if [the] 500 kg could theoretically do more damage.” This is even more concise: “Just. Build. The. Bomb. Explode. Explode.”
The good news that some are hoping is that the order will provide Arrowhead with more data about the bomb, which it could potentially use to improve its product, assuming the studio isn’t happy with its current place in its game library.
