Living in massively multiplayer online games is a very successful mechanism. It allows players to create a personalized space, often by incorporating elements and objects collected throughout their adventures. Although World of Warcraft had previously experimented with a similar concept with Warlords of Draenor’s Garrisons, fans felt that the system lacked depth and customization.
It was during the very first Warcraft Direct event that Blizzard surprised its players by revealing this new feature. Ion Hazzikostas, the game director, hinted at this announcement by mentioning: “Let’s talk about what makes a homebefore presenting a short video. In this teaser, an armored warrior enters a decorated room, holding a mug that says “Home Sweet Home,” confirming the addition of a shelter. Reactions on Twitter and other social networks were immediate, with the developers confirming that this scene was indeed a reference to the customization of a living space in the Midnight expansion.
What could living in WoW look like?
Although few details were revealed, clues from the teaser point to decoration options based on symbolic objects from the WoW universe. We see iconic weapons, a training dummy and even an Onyxia head that can be mounted on the wall. There is speculation as to whether this placement will be based on individual instances like in Guild Wars 2, or whether Blizzard will consider a public district system similar to that of Final Fantasy 14.
