This week Apple turned 44. For a technology company, this is already enough. More than enough reason to pass on all sorts of different situations. The times when the fate of the company was held on the edge of race. That is the future he could choose one side or the other anonymously.
That's when it was simple telephone phone. One that would change the course of technology forever.
Selecting when selecting the next NEXT processor
Chris MacAskill is responsible for the developer relationship at NEXT. He has worked closely with Steve Jobs many times, coming to witness at many meetings with companies like Adobe, Microsoft or Intel. As an anecdote, he remembers a time when he accused Gates of "stealing" fonts from Adobe. Microsoft's CEO replied that they did not want to enter the business, but instead forced Adobe to open their own competition.
One day, one of the guests who met with Jobs became Motorola's CEO, George Fisher. That's where it came down, in the words of MacAskill, to the bomb: Motorola would end support for its 68000 processor list. These processes were inside Apple and NEXT computers. His suggestion was that NEXT accepted the future 88110.
The problem was that they will have to redirect their Hardware adaptation to new buildings. As if that's not enough for a small company like NEXT, they'll have to ask developers to adapt to a new processor. If they were successful, they would risk Motorola finishing its development because of less support from the industry, leading to a new version.
After dominating the selections from other competitors directly on NEXT such as Sun MicrosystemsMacAskill thought of Intel. That's when he did and Call assistant Andy Grove, CEO of the company.
A phone that will change Apple's history forever
So far in history, Apple has not been included. But it will happen over time. MacAskill knew that Jobs had chosen to bet on Motorola and, therefore, decided to test Intel the obvious movement of disobedience. The Santa Clara, California-based company claims to have my wife's most coveted map when it can be reached by Motorola. "10 times more powerful" than the Motorola 68000.
The visit of Andy Grove and his team from Intel confirmed operations that his platform can prepare for the future of NEXT
Eventually, a meeting between Intel and NEXT team began, and the activities in it. MacAskill himself wasn't in it, though relates that the following takes place in the background:
Later Steve came to my office and asked me if I thought why getting NeXTstep off Intel was a good idea. How wonderful. Was he able [his "deal" with Intel behind the Jobs]? I asked him if Intel would help. Steve said the two main engineers were provided to work with ours. They think it can be done in 6 months. We have to keep it a secret from the outside world. Would you care to manage the relationship?
[…] Six months later I brought a beige Intel-based computer from a windowless room to my office, wrapped in a black cloth. It had about twice as much power as our attractive black equipment.
Many years later, when Apple was considering getting a company there schedule your next application, there were only two electoral systems: Be OS and NeXTstep. The first is led by Jean-Louis Gassée, an Apple executive who has always accused Job of stabbing him in the back. The second was from a company founded by Jobs after leaving Apple.
The final decision, as MacAskill relates, was made by Apple CEO from 1994 to 1997, Gil Amelio:
We had some great internal discussions about it. Many people at Apple were scared of Steve and Jean-Louis had a lot of supporters. The OS OS is highly regarded. It eventually came down to NEXT already supporting Intel and that was a big deal for us.
Intel's backing is what made the balance stronger and justified Steve Jobs' return to Apple. Everything thanks to MacAskill's disobedience She works for herself and turns the future of the technology world into one telephone phone.
