Mario and Luigi are certainly the most famous cult figures from Nintendo and have already been seen in a joint game series. This could possibly be continued again.

In the past, Mario and Luigi often played together in their own Nintendo game series. For the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS handhelds, there were several RPG-style titles, starting with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in 2003 on the GBA. Now another serial branch might be in the works.

The trademark entry specifically mentions "computer game cartridges; game memory card" as well as "computer game software" and "video games". So the question remains: does Nintendo just secure existing trademark rights in the form of a corresponding extension with the new entry, or is this actually a tangible indication of a new, developing part of the series? That will probably only show the future, because a reliable statement is currently not possible.
