Suicide Squad’s programming isn’t that bad…although it doesn’t do a very good job either. A bit complicated, right?
If there’s one game that’s been the subject of much controversy, it’s the latter. Rocksteady Studios. After the good taste that the studio left us thanks to the Batman saga, Expectations were very high for his new job. But all that excitement dissipated when we saw the first playable trailer for Suicide squad. Players did not like some of the game mechanics conveyed by the video and, fortunately, the company received this back to reorient his work. Thanks to this, today we have a different title which, although it has that essence seen in the first trailers, manages to provide a series of ideas very well implemented as we will explain in the following analysis . Ready for action?
The bad guys in power!
As we have seen in the latest movies, The Suicide Squad is nothing more than a group of villains tasked with an impossible mission to accomplish. And although in the filmographies we have seen the participation of many DC Comics villains, this time the spotlight will turn to four characters. Harley Queen, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot and King Shark. A collection of very different characters with one goal: stop the threat that Brainiac is spreading across Metropolis. A very serious threat, since the main heroes have fallen or are controlled to commit evil on the city streets.
Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and other superheroes have fallen under the yoke of a greater evil. For any comic book fan, Watching this series of characters commit crimes can be very tempting. It is extremely curious to see the Black Knight killing civilians without discretion. It’s also not bad to see the support other villains give us in fighting evil, and that’s because the names seem as relevant as Penguin himself or even Poison Ivy. Come on, we have a fan service In all the rules.
Easy triggering
This whole collection of DC Comics celebrities makes The first few hours of Suicide Squad are really interesting. It’s a joy to explore the city of Metropolis in a seemingly unwinnable war. In addition to the main missions that revolve around the Justice League, there will be no shortage of secondary options either, with new and old acquaintances that will require us a little of our precious time to complete a series of favors. Generally speaking, and as I have already said, the experience can be quite satisfactory at the beginning… even if then the curves arrive.
There is a point in the adventure where the wolf’s ears start to appear. And that’s not bad, if you know the expectations. After a few hours, the side missions become more plentiful than the main ones, and the two start to feel very similar. Protect an area from enemies, endure wave after wave, search for civilians hiding in buildings and similar variants. The main problem is that no matter what you do, everything resolves the same way, and it can burn you out if spent a lot of time on it. Unless you enjoy adventure in his cooperative side with three other friends, where the whole experience takes on a completely crazier and fun tone.
One for all and all for one
Fortunately, I find the gunplay very satisfying. It’s a pleasure to control each member of the Suicide Squad. Each member has their own moveset, they are controlled differently, and their weapons change depending on who you are controlling. It’s wonderful to move with Harley Queen with her hook, to alternate with King Shark’s titanic jumps or to use Captain Boomerang’s teleport. And this allows each user to find the way of playing that suits them best depending on the protagonist in question. Although there are risks if we do this…
Suicide Squad knows we can get by controlling a bad guy, so they took matters into their own hands. There will be missions where certain protagonists will be more “mentalized” than others, and in this way they will have an experience bonus and their skills will be improved until the end of the mission. Plus, the experience level is different for each hero (or villain, you know what I mean), and If we want to have an even team, the four of us better be pretty good.
Another beacon with supplies
There is another issue that may generate some disagreement, and that is the essence shooter-looter that the game has. There is no mission where we do not receive rewards in the form of weapons, augmentations and other types of artifacts. This is the nature of the game and we must learn to dissociate this proposition from any Batman title made by Rocksteady. Whether we find more or less rifles and shotguns does not significantly hinder the flow of the plot, but it is true that it can become somewhat annoying. In my personal case, The rhythm between mission and mission broke a lot for me. Too much customization when all the player wants to do is go shooting all over the city.
We don’t have time to make popcorn
In its audiovisual section it is a very remarkable game. The character modeling seems very accurate to me, and even though they don’t have the faces of the real actors, it didn’t shock me too much.
Suicide Squad Conclusion: Kill the Justice League
Batman’s shadow may be longer than Rocksteady thought, and although they did a different job, the Dark Knight hurt this version. If you like shooting games with a certain nature shooter-looter, you are facing a good candidate. The great differentiation between the characters, their technical aspect and their playability is very well done. It’s just as fun to select one of the four crazy people that make up the team and it’s a lot of fun to fight against the heroes who starred in the comics that we all know.
Of course there are mistakes. The essence of the missions is particularly heavy, whether they are main or secondary. Although you will have to complete different tasks, in the end everything will be solved in the same way: filling everyone we see on the screen with lead. Let’s see… it’s a game focused on that, but they could have given a different twist to each character. There is still time to redeem ourselves, and we will have to see what surprises the studio has in store for us with the launch of the first season, with the claim of the Joker as a controllable character.
