Mane6 presents the console version of Them’s Fighting Herds, the fantastic fighting game featuring adorable hoofed animals
As we have announced in recent years, the fighting genre is experiencing a new golden age with great titles for all tastes. With the all-powerful Street Fighter 6 on our doorstep, Tekken 8 coming to the fore and the return of great sagas like KOF or Fatal Fury. Without forgetting the excellent work of Arc System Works with Dragon Ball Fighterz or Guilty Gear Strive, which will arrive in the coming months on Xbox consoles. Although today is the time to talk about a much more humble proposal, but which does not have much to envy to the titans that we have just mentioned. They fight the herdsdevelopped by Mane6lands on consoles after having had a brutal acceptance on PC since its beta phase in 2018 and its official launch in 2020.
The adorable look of its playable characters, different types of hoofed animals with a touch of fantasy, will probably tell you something. Since they were designed by the cheerleader Lauren Faustwho worked on the production of My little Pony y Powerpuff Girls (The Powerpuff Girls in Europe). To this fantastic graphic display, we have to add simple and deep gameplay and various game modes. Not to mention its Spectacular inline structure based on GGPO netcode (you can read more about it here). We are going to detail all the advantages of this great fighting game that you cannot miss.
The King of the Iron Hoof Tournament
One of the main advantages of Them’s Fighting Herds is its combat system, which is easy to understand and difficult to master. We will have at our disposal four attack buttons: light hit, medium hit, hard hit and magic attack. Which have different variations if we press different direction buttons. As usual in the genre, we will also have several special moves and final attacks, which we can perform as our Super bar fills up.
The combo system is very similar to what can be found in the anime fight Games, being able to launch combos on the ground to raise our rival and follow him in the air. Each character has a completely different fighting style and unique moves, so it won’t be difficult to find one that suits you.
To do this, we can learn the basic combos of each character in their combo challenges and improve them freely in training mode. Once its basic mechanics have been mastered, it’s time to dive into its different game modes, which are very varied and fun.
A most original story mode
Although I followed the development of Them’s Fighting Herds in its early days, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by its story mode, which I was unfamiliar with. It is an RPG in the use of the pixelated style, with a great narrative chargewhich so far only has its first chapter featuring the little calf Arizona. The main story tries to fight the threat hanging over the kingdom of Foenum, where the different races of animals live. Our mission as Arizona, proclaimed champion of the Prairie, will be to learn more about this threat and recover “the key” that seems to be the solution to rid itself of evil.
With the adorable calf Arizona we will have to explore several maps full of secrets and spectral enemies to face to complete the mission entrusted to us. I would like to acknowledge the good work and originality of Mane6 in creating a wide assortment of character worlds with many lines of dialogue, collectibles and customization items for the Arizona avatar.
The variety of his scenarios is fantastic, since we will be able to explore open paths, dungeons and towns that intersect with very original combat phases. Since many fights will be against several enemies having to manage our health and our resources. As well as boss fights which also include platforming parts. Something that comes out of the canons we are used to in the genre. Quite a success that makes us want more content, which will soon arrive for free.
Without forgetting the classic Arcade modewhere we will face the different characters of Them’s Fighting Herds as the difficulty between fights increases.
An exquisite online
Another of Them’s Fighting Herds strengths is its online structure, like we said before. Mainly because of the GGPO netcode, which allows us to play online games very efficiently and with very little lag. And that in addition, by having crossplay between its platforms, it will be easy to find a rival to compete with.
As if it were your Arc System Works game, we will be able to enter the lobbies where we will see the players on each server in real time, being able to challenge them to a fight in just two clicks. Where we can also customize our avatar with a large number of cosmetic items that we can buy with the salt that we earn in each fight.
On the other hand, we can also create private rooms with our friends to fight restlessly in a more direct way. In short, nothing to envy to the rest of the titans of the genre with which this humble title competes.
Them’s Fighting Herds Final Conclusions
I can’t help but highly recommend Them’s Fighting Herds, whether you’re a fan of the genre or just want to dive into it. For the former, you’ll find everything one usually asks for when it comes to fighting titles, entertaining offline modes, and a properly functioning online one. If, on the other hand, you are overwhelmed by the difficulty that this type of game usually entails, I think it is a very friendly gateway, especially for the little ones in the house, since it does not have any type of explicit violence and The design of their characters is adorable.
As the only negative point I would put the rarity of its initial list, of only seven characters, although a little more can be requested from a game with a starting price of less than 20 dollars. Of course, you can get a first season pass which will include four new characters, including Arizona’s father, who will arrive in the coming months. In short, we find a title made with great care and which I think is worth supporting.
