The modern world is something that shocks us constantly. But it was impossible to imagine years later This war of mine would not only be a bestseller that shaped 11-bit studios in many ways. But also that life will again painfully remind us of the relevance of its subject, and we will once again learn that we made more than just a game.
The Balkan War was the initial spark for the idea of making such a game. But the Warsaw Uprising, the Siege of Grozny and the Syrian Civil War also drew inspiration. All of these conflicts had one thing in common – the tragedy of civilians trapped in hostilities-ravaged cities. When This war of mine was still under development when war broke out in Donbass in March 2014, and the team felt even more responsible for getting its message across in the right tone and conveying the importance of what we are trying to achieve. And now we are deeply shocked by the scale of the aggression directed against Ukraine eight years later and the fact that humanity is having to relive all these atrocities.
Hours after Russia invaded Ukraine, when images of destroyed buildings surfaced the internet, people started writing: “It looks like it This war of mine.” While you can be proud that your work was so accurate that it connected to specific situations, it is also immensely bitter This war of mine Accuracy remains current. So, as developers of a game with an anti-war message, we felt the urgency to act and launched the Ukraine fundraiser that same day.
Back when the idea behind the game was taking shape, we thought it could be something unique. A platform to deliver a meaningful message. Without a certain subtlety in dealing with the subject, it would not be possible to present it with respect and sensitivity. Civilians trapped in a war-torn reality, dying of starvation and lack of medicine – that’s not what you associate with simple entertainment when you think of games. This war of mine was a risk. But we didn’t give in. In order not to trivialize the issue, we decided that every part of the game must correspond to its essence and message. From the game mechanics to the script to the graphics. Everything should act as a cohesive whole, highlighting the horrors of war.
When This war of mine is making its transition to Xbox Series X|S, and thanks to 4K visuals, it’s never worked better as such an experience, so we can safely say we’ve succeeded. And being included in Game Pass will help spread our message even further. The risk paid off, and after that This war of mine
, we said to ourselves that we don’t just want to make games. We want to create games with thought-provoking themes that can be viewed as meaningful entertainment. And we still do.

I started playing Xbox a lot thanks to Call of Duty online. Since then I haven't stopped playing competitive online.
