According to Take Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, the Borderlands movie was a disappointment but still managed to boost game sales.
Despite a Hollywood cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jack Black, the Borderlands film could not meet the expectations placed on it.
With a production budget of $115 million plus marketing and distribution costs of $30 million, the film only grossed $33 million worldwide after a three-week theatrical run.
A disappointing result, as Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted during the company’s quarterly conference call. However, the film also had positive effects in terms of game sales:
“With regards to Borderlands, we do not need to break down the film’s contribution as, while it was economically positive, it did not have a significant impact on our results.”
“Although the film was disappointing, it had a positive impact on our catalog sales. This is a sign that a film or television series based on our high-quality intellectual property can boost catalog sales, and that can be a good thing.”
“We’re very selective, and one of the reasons we’re so selective about licensing is because we would really prefer that anything that comes out with our brands be really successful, and we can’t guarantee that before especially when it is not in our hands. So we have licensed other titles and will continue to do so selectively, but [man beachte das] very subtle word selective”.
