We bring you the analysis of Geometry Survivor, a game from Brain Seal Ltd that may seem very simple but whose addictive levels can surprise us. The game is suitable for both Xbox One and Xbox Series. Ready ? So let’s go :
An 80s Tron-esque aesthetic
The game has a very retro look. inspired by the visual keys of the legendary and revolutionary film Tron (Steven Lisberger, 1982). Geometric, bright and multi-colored shapes will appear on the screen. Of course, this is still a simple aspect, even if the title doesn’t require much more.
If this Particularly striking are the particles and ship explosions.. Although as time passes and the screen fills with ships and destruction, we may notice some confusion. It would have been helpful if our perks/artifacts were just one different color than all the other ships.
The music also has that 80s touch of Tron and the beginnings of the video game world. The sensation is the use of the famous synthesizers so fashionable in the world of cinema and soundtracks at the beginning of this decade of the last century. On the other hand we also have electronic compositions which recall the early 90s and the beginnings of electronic music. The effects go somewhat unnoticed due to the volume of the music and with a few exceptions like the lasers which recall the well-known sound of Star Wars lightsabers, it is an aspect that goes very unnoticed.
Genre and influences of Geometry Survivor
The game starts from a very simple principle, delete everything that appears on the screen. We are faced with rogue-lite survival. It’s also an auto shooter game, which means we don’t need to touch any buttons, just move. This results in maximum playability.
This will not be foreign to many, it will have occurred to them Vampire Survivors. A game that took by storm and ended up hooking Phil Spencer himself. Well, this game combines the best of it and takes up a somewhat forgotten saga: Geometry Wars. This is a long-running saga with over a decade behind it and has been around on Xbox for two generations.
The approach to the game
Geometry Survivor can seem almost abusively simple, in the purest style of early video games. However, the roguelite component and the strategy make everything much more complex. The enemies will be real headaches and they will come out in increasingly numerous waves, explosive, faster and launching at you. The objective is to survive at all costs for a period of twenty minutes.
When ships die, they leave behind items. These can be blue, which will be used to increase our level, or yellow, which will be the currency used in the store. When we fill our level bar, the game stops and we will have to choose one of three cards. Each of them represents a different improvement that can range from the support ship, the shield, the black hole, various shooting options, a whole series of options that will make us improve little by little. We can also choose between a new improvement, or raising the level of those we already have.
As time passes and we level up and destroy enemies (something completely satisfying), enemy ships appear faster and faster, in greater numbers and in greater concentration. When we die, we lose everything we have accumulated. Of course the money is added to our private account and we can use it in store and in the purchase of improvements which will be permanent
In conclusion Geometry Survivor = pure addiction
We are faced with a game that, because it is so simple, will hook us from the first moment. Geometry Survivor will be more than attractive to everyone who played its predecessors, the Geographic Wars saga. Also for fans of Vampire Survivors and games like Tetris Effect in which the challenge increases.
It’s true that the game lasts 20 minutes. But be careful, this is not in real time. It took me over four hours to achieve my first victory. IReplayability is maximum since each game is different depending on the weapons/modifiers used. Even if we lose at the first opportunity, we always look forward to another game. and that speaks volumes about how fun and addictive it can be and how well-done its development is.
