The new LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set hits the shelves for fans and nostalgics in January.
The LEGO Group today announced the new LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone Set, a detailed LEGO brick rendering of one of the most iconic video game levels of all time.
This new analog version of the Green Hill Zone was designed by 24-year-old British LEGO superfan Viv Grannell via the LEGO Ideas platform and gives fans the opportunity to build a piece of video game history themselves.
Sonic the Hedgehog appeared on player screens around the world in 1991 as he raced through the first level of the game to collect gold rings. The now iconic Green Hill Zone is a light green overgrown landscape that is inspired by the characteristic hills of California.
Sonic has kept the tradition of the popular Green Hill Zone in many new versions of the game over the past 30 years – and now this zone can be approached in a new way: as a “lifelike” version of LEGO that is fan-built can and will be available on New Years Day in LEGO stores and on the website.
The 1,125-piece set contains many charming details and Easter eggs, including minifigures – an updated version of Sonic, Crabmeat, Moto Bug, Dr. Eggman and the Phantom Ruby. It also includes a 10-ring box, gold-colored rings and a technical lever with which Sonic and his friends can be catapulted into the air.
And just like in the game, you can get a gem as a reward when building the set! This dynamic LEGO set offers years of fun and joy, regardless of whether you put it on the shelf or play with it.
LEGO fan Viv Grannell is a passionate Sonic fan and saw the opportunity to build her own LEGO set. The design was submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform, a LEGO initiative that allows fans to share ideas that the entire LEGO fan base can vote on.
The entry received the 10,000 votes required to be given the go-ahead by the LEGO team and put into action.
LEGO designer Sam Johnson took on the challenge of transforming the concept into a LEGO set. About the set he said:
