I don’t know if it was at a PC Gaming Show or an event like the one I first saw. Jaw breaker. What I saw in its trailer and its aesthetic attracted me enough to add it to my long Steam wishlist. Now that I’ve had the chance to play it, I want to bring you my analysis of Jaw breaker to help you decide if you like these types of games.
Released April 23 for the moment only in PCthe game is work of a single developerVincent Lade, who already has experience in other games like The witching hour o Harthorn.
The story
At the level of history, the game places us in a future in which humanity is on the verge of collapse and society is ruled by several gangs. Located in the The United States after the “great economic collapse of 2028”the only way to survive is to join one of the gangs that dominate the territory and try to live one more day with what you can, because the fight for resources is fierce and only spending the night will be a success in your life.
We We will put ourselves in the shoes of the one who was once a school teacher and now a member of a small gang in New Citadel City.
The story, even if it is not very innovative, we follow it with interest despite the clichés seen in this type of game (a voice speaking to us over the police station sound system without knowing who it is, etc.). The game has multiple endings and replayability is invited. We’ve only experienced one so far, but I think the ending feels somewhat rushed.
playable base
Now fully entering the playable part, Jaw breaker awaits us first person survival horror whose influences are clear. Throughout the game, a mixture of secret, riddles and an action that will make the tension constant and our hair stand on end.
Even though we will have weapons, the playable base will be more stealthy, since the weapons will be more intended to escape on occasion when we are caught, the ammunition being very rare and cannot be used to directly attack the monsters. The stealth aspect will be increased since very soon we will recover a sort of Alien Isolation style detector which will indicate, in addition to the objective/exit from the stage, the presence of enemies and their movement.
There will be no shortage of puzzles To move forward, the other main playable base is stealth. There will be classics and more innovative ones. Most will be very logical and easy to solve, but there will also be some that will make us think a little more. It is understood that normally we will not have enemy pressure to resolve them and that we will be able to move more or less freely to find the keys.
In this movement, neither will be missing jump scare, very well graduated and very well introduced. I really liked this aspect and it contributes a lot to the tone of the game. We feel that there are the good ones and at the right time, without overdoing them and without making them too “artificial”.
We will have different levels from each other
The game is divided into 25 levels separated from each other. There will be no save points within the same level as the game automatically saves your progress when you complete a level. The first ones will be quite affordable but I recognize that at level 7 the difficulty has increased considerably. After overcoming it, the developer released a patch reducing its difficulty and publicly acknowledging that this extra difficulty was intended to bring the player face to face with stealth and how to handle these levels.
We will also have 3 bosses to eliminate But, as we said, the way to defeat them will not be to shoot them, but to play with the decor and the objects they contain to be able to destroy them little by little. This adds some playable variety, although admittedly I didn’t like them at all.
In addition to being able to find collectibles, we can also find special coins that we can insert into a classic candy machine that, instead of candy, will give us certain objects. There will be several machines and each of them will require a certain number of parts in exchange. Obviously, the more coins, the more reward, the last being a very useful pistol with silencer.
Technical and graphics performance
Concerning the technical and visual part, PC gaming performed well, although it is true that the PC on which the game was played more than met the recommended requirements. Yes, I would have eliminated the little scene that appears when you are killed, because it cannot be avoided and, in my opinion, it lasts a long time.
Graphically it looks very good, despite a slightly loose texture. There lightning It also rasps at a good level and the play of lights, especially with the neon lights, suits it very well. There aesthetic similar to moviesThe purge» (with masked men and some gore) fits very much with the tone of the game and can be another appealing aspect.
