Hey Xbox fans! The Callisto Protocol Tomorrow launches the brand new Riot mode, an exciting new player experience where the goal is to defeat as many enemies as possible. In Riot mode, you face off against wave after wave of enemies, facing increasingly difficult challenges along the way. To add to the fun, you can earn credits that can be used to purchase upgrades and loot from crates scattered around the arena. I recently spoke to level designer Kevin Jaszanovits and senior systems engineer Philip Greene, some of the people behind it The Callisto Protocol brand new Riot mode to learn more about this exciting new mode.
Riot mode brings a different touch The Callisto Protocol core elements. In order to achieve this, the developers had to break some of the main game’s rules and push their already existing designs in other directions.
“We wanted to make this mode more of an arcade game than a horror game to have more fun with it,” explains Jaszanovits.
Jaszanovits’ goal as a level designer was to create an environment where players could run from room to room feeling like they were constantly being followed and surrounded by enemies. “We tried removing or adjusting gameplay elements that were slowing down the player,” he says.
Greene adds, “Our goal was to create a simple, fun looping gameplay, but with a secondary value that allows players to develop new strategies across multiple play sessions.” This leads to several different systems that empower players over time to find their style and power through waves of infected.”
Riot Mode features enemy behavior and wave composition that will keep players on their toes. As the game progresses, you’ll have to adapt your strategies to overcome each new challenge. With only two weapon slots available, you’ll also need to spend credits wisely to upgrade and switch weapons, as well as open health, GRP, and fuse containers. And when things get really tough, activate Rampage mode for a temporary buff with unlimited ammo, GRP consumption, and enemy insta-kill.
“We wanted to delve deeply into the fun of murder,” says Greene. “So we incorporated as many features into the game as we could that evoked the feel of an enjoyable battle. Empower the player with powerful weapons [and] We give them additional perks that allow them to take the fight to a new level.”
To add to the arcade feel, Riot Mode features a scoring system based on kills and dismemberments, with a total score tracking the player’s progress throughout the game. “I can hit 30s fairly consistently, but some of our QA testers broke the 100 wave. It’s fun to see our team members posting their high scores in our internal chats. “You have to show the receipts if you want to brag,” says Jaszanovits.
Riot mode is a challenging and fun experience that will keep you hooked for hours. The focus on keeping combat consistent and fluid while introducing fun subsystems and an easy gameplay loop makes it a great addition The Callisto Protocol.
