They still want to kill it, but the reality is that the physical format is still very much alive. It is obvious that the digital format has many advantages, but this does not mean that the two formats can continue to coexist for several more years.
For the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, both formats can continue without problem. It is clear that he sees the obvious advantages of the digital format, but despite this, he sees the disappearance of the physical format as very distant, something that many predict, but which still does not happen.
The physical format will remain for years
I have already explained in the past, ten years ago I believe, that the digital market share would increase enormously to the detriment of the retail market. But I think it’s almost certain that there will still be room in the future for a physical video game market, and it will be there for a long time.
For example, the retail market remains an important part of the music sector. As Take-Two, our position is known: we will always be there and as consumers want us. We will continue to support the retail market if it makes sense, we do not make decisions based on opinions, but always guide our choices based on those of users. And then it’s not expensive to face the challenges of physical distribution… or rather, it’s not expensive for those who correctly manage stocks and production volume, but beforehand it was necessary to produce the cartridges and we had no control over what would happen afterwards, whereas today it is enough. To place the order and in five days you will have your copies on disk.
As you can read in the quote above, for Take-Two the business of physical games will last and they will always be where the users are, so you can take for granted the launch of GTA 6 in its box and with a disk.
