Call Screen in the Pixels is a whole experience that came to Europe to respond quickly to calls normally identified as spam. Now it’s “humanized” in voice, aside from applying the protection level menu redesign and removing granular controls when answering a call.
This function arrived in Europe in 2021 and lets you answer the calls you want with the voice of the Google Assistant. It also transcribes what the caller said so you can check if you want to return the call. This feature serves to counterattack those spam calls that have been a torment to millions of people across the planet.
There is a difference between this feature in the United States and the rest of the countries where it has been deployed: Call screening options are manual in Europe instead of automatic. Therefore, Google has given users options to configure the different responses that can be given to an incoming call, whether spam, fake, private or hidden numbers.
In addition, until now, this Pixel measure could be configured to silently reject calls, ring the mobile or automatically go to the screen and thus cancel an unwanted call. But now, the new protection level menu removes granular controls and presents only these options: maximum, medium and basic.
The maximum level is to display all unknown numbers on the screen, the way to reject unwanted calls and view suspicious calls, while the basic way is used to stop spam-related unknown phone numbers. The worst thing about this update is that even though the call screening experience is simplified, the user no longer has the option to manage these types of calls with a wide range of options.
On the one hand, the menu is optimized to make it easier to learn, but now its customization is less compared to the old one. Google will know why it made this change, but it surely has its reason for implementing it on Pixels.
Call screen also improves the voice of the assistant to make him more “human” and not as robotic as he used to be. But yes, it no longer allows you to automatically reject unknown calls so now they all go to the screen to decide the answer via the redesigned menu.
This update affects the Google Phone app, according to Android Authority, with version 106.0.534575879. As often happens, the rollout is limited by region, so we have to wait a bit for it to be available on Pixels here in Europe.
