Apple tries to resurrect 3D Touch with new feature in iOS 17 beta

Haptic feedback iOS 17 beta 2

Device functions evolve as do operating systems. One of the technologies that was very successful a few years ago was 3D Touch, a system integrated into the screen of certain iPhones. ancient this allowed us to detect the force we made with our finger and access the menus directly with the pressure. However, Apple put an end to this technology to integrate a similar system but based only on the time that one presses on an element on the screen. In the new iOS 17 beta, Apple has introduced a new feature that reminds us of those wonderful times with 3D Touch.

Do you remember 3D Touch? : this new iOS 17 beta looks alike

The transition from 3D Touch to Haptic Touch started with the iPhone XR when Apple decided to remove 3D Touch from the screen of this device. At that time they created Haptic touch, similar technology outside of any built-in hardware that allowed us to interact with menus and our keystrokes but these interactions were slower. The success of 3D Touch was that users could perform different actions based on the actual force applied to the screen and so far this experience has not been picked up.

In beta 2 of iOS 17 Apple made changes in Haptic Touch. A new option has been added to the “Haptic Response” or Haptic Touch menu. Until now, we had two options depending on the duration of the touch we wanted: “short” or “long”. In the new beta of iOS 17 a third option is included: “Default” (it is not translated, for the moment)

In this way, the old “short” option is the same in iOS 16 and iOS 17. The new “Default” option in iOS 17 works the same as the fast option in iOS 16. And finally, the change lies in the “Fast” option of iOS 17 whose waiting time has been reduced to 200 milliseconds (against 500 for the “default” option). This will allow get a little closer to the 3D Touch experience through faster access to menus or interactions that we perform from anywhere in the operating system.
