3. Design and production quality
If you look back on the two iPhones, we'll see that the difference is small. The main difference is the size, because both models have the same rear camera and the same combination of glass and aluminum.
As soon as you turn them, you'll find that it is much easier to know which one. The iPhone SE (2020) continues to use the older (but more popular) design with a recognizable home button and a screen with thick bezels. Same with iPhone 8 (not original SE).
On the other hand, the iPhone XR has the most modern design of Apple's mobiles, with a screen that works just about every front. The only thing there is notch, where the front camera and speaker sit.
These physical differences are also reflected in the biometric safety system used. The front XR camera is compatible with the face ID to unlock and charge with your cell phone, while in the new SE the ID ID is stored on the home button.
Apart from the screen and body variants of the two models, the iPhone SE is very easy to use. It's smaller, smaller and lighter, and the fact that the screen is too small makes it handy.
Here are the sizes:
- IPhone SE (2020): 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm | 148 g
- IPhone XR: 150.9 x 75.7 x 8.3mm | 194 g
There are several design elements in common at both stations. This is the condition of the Lightning charging port or its water resistance with IP67. Available colors are different, because the iPhone XR can also be purchased in blue, yellow and coral.
4. Benefits
Although 18 months have passed between the launch of any model, there are standard specifications for the new iPhone SE and iPhone XR. This is the case with cameras, wireless charging and Dual SIM compatibility.
That does not mean that there is an important difference that will help you provide the balance. As we mentioned, the iPhone SE (2020) will be ideal for those who do not want to release the tiny 4.7 ”screen with the boot button and ID ID.
Another difference is found in the processor. The iPhone SE (2020) includes the A13 Bionic, the same one we found on the iPhone 11. Instead the iPhone XR features the A12 Bionic, which is old and will not offer the same functionality.
This difference in processors also means that the iPhone SE's third-generation Neural Engine will provide better image results. Both multiple Portrait Lighting Effects, enhanced Smart HDR and QuickTime video are available.
However, that doesn't mean that the iPhone XR doesn't offer other features. This is the case of Animoji and Memoji which can be done with the front camera, which also has Smart HDR and video stabilization with cinema quality.
It seems important to say that the SE is available in a large capacity of 256 GB, while the XR is available in the bulk of 128 GB. If your biggest concern is the placebo, you should bet on SE.
Battery independence is the same. On paper, the XR battery lasts longer, and it's because Apple has confirmed that it has 16 hours of video playback. Instead, and again according to Apple, this same re-play takes about 13 hours.
Decision: iPhone SE (2020) or iPhone XR?
With a sleek design and some standard specifications, the choice between the iPhone SE (2020) and the iPhone XR is not so easy and the decision is limited by a few important things. On the other hand, price and processor.
By recommending SE we have a more affordable price (or 256 GB) with a new processor. However, the main reason for buying this model is its circular design, with a small screen and a boot button (ID ID).
Those looking for a modern screen and touch controls will see the iPhone XR as a better option, although it wouldn't be our first recommendation since it's already a few years old. Maybe it would be better to bet on the iPhone 11.
