Apple has released the final version of iOS 14.5 with which important new features are coming, such as the long-awaited ability to unlock iPhone with the mask using Face ID and the Apple Watch smartwatch.
Apple launched the first beta tests of iOS 14.5 on February 1, and finally, it can already be used by the general public, benefiting from some interesting news that we will see below.
But what features does iOS 14.5 include?
What features does iOS 14.5 include?
From April 26, the new final version is available for all iPhone users. There are several new features you should know about. We’ve listed a few below, but more are likely to come. Typical security and technical solutions for each update are also included.
Siri
Apple has long been reducing the screen space taken up by Siri. In iOS 14.5, the company changes question fields to Siri and displays them in different bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
On the other hand, with the new version, you can choose to use a female or male voice for Siri in the setup process (and not after). Plus, new voices are coming for Siri, at least in the English version.
Drums
Another novelty of iOS 14.5 is an internal optimization that you will especially not notice but your iPhone’s battery will, since it has to do with the recalibration of the Phone 11 battery. -being had an error so far this makes these models sell out quickly.
Find my Iphone
The Find My app, which makes it easy to find a lost iPhone, Apple Watch or Mac, will now allow you to locate other non-Apple products as well.
The first non-Apple products to be found are the Beats headphones, but they will be arriving for other brands as well. This clearly coincides with the release of the new Apple AirTag trackers announced by the company, which can be purchased from April 30.
217 new emoticons
IOS 14.5 version added hundreds of new emoticons, including new ones smileys, two new hearts, emoticons for bearded women and the ability to use more skin tones to create interracial couples.
Apple has also removed the blood droplets from the syringe emoticon to better represent an injection. The headset emoji now looks more like AirPods Max.
Shortcuts
There are now new options for Siri Shortcuts. On the one hand, you can use the app to take a screenshot and integrate this part of your shortcuts. There is also a new shortcut to lock screen orientation or switch from 4G to 5G.
Apple TV and remote control
Speaking of Siri, all references to Siri Remote have been replaced by “Apple TV Remote”. In this way, new Apple TV devices are supported with the ability to play more graphics-demanding video games than current models.
Choose your default music and podcast app
There are many new features associated with music podcasts, but perhaps the most striking is that from now on you will be able to choose and set your favorite music app and platform with iOS 14.5, instead of having to use Apple Music. You will be able to choose alternatives such as Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and many more.
Unlock iPhone with Mask
What excites us the most about iOS 14.5 is that it allows you to unlock your iPhone even while wearing a face mask. Of course, this will only be possible as long as you have your Apple Watch turned on at the same time, where you can confirm that it is indeed you.
The new feature works as follows: If your watch is unlocked and your iPhone detects that you are wearing a mask, it will ask you on your wrist if you want to confirm that the iPhone needs to be unlocked.
Improved privacy
The iOS 14.5 update focuses on privacy. The company said the rules for how developers and advertisers can track their users in the new version are changing.
The new rules have been criticized, but almost only from companies dedicated to this tracking for business purposes, like Facebook. Apple says the rules don’t prohibit tracking, but it’s up to users to decide whether or not they want it applied to them.
There is a way for Apple to provide information to advertisers. Apple is introducing a way to identify the original pages and apps the user is from, and the company promises that the identification will be private.
Improved security
In iOS 14.5, Apple stepped up security with Pointer Authentication Codes (PACs), so it will be enforced in a previously unprotected category. This should make hacking an iPhone even more difficult.
With the new system, cryptographic signatures are used to ensure that the code in memory cannot be tampered with, as well as to alert against false versions of the various functions.
On the other hand, with iOS 14.5, it looks like users can already choose to install a security update without having to update the entire operating system.
Fitness + y AirPlay 2
Although the service is not yet available in all countries, be aware that with iOS 14.5, it is already possible to play Fitness + content on a smart TV thanks to AirPlay 2.
Compartir la Apple card
When it comes to payments and Apple Card usage, with iOS 14.5 comes the option that multiple people can use the same Apple Card account, possibly through the Apple Family feature. In this way, parents or supervisors will be able to authorize payments from minors.
Controller support for PS5 and Xbox
The new iOS 14.5 update is also compatible with next-generation controllers from Sony and Microsoft. This means that the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller and the Xbox Series X controller can be used with the iPhone and the iPad to, for example, play Apple Arcade.
Software updates
The update screen in iPhone ‘Settings’ is almost always blank unless a new version is available. Now, in addition to telling you that your iPhone is up to date, it includes information about the vulnerabilities fixed and the last time you checked for available updates.
Apple Music
Apple is adding a new section, “For You”, based on your playlists. In addition, Apple Music will more accurately show you the release dates of songs and albums (so far only the year was shown). In iOS 14.5, you will be able to see the day and month.
On the other hand, in iOS 14.5 you can now change the default music player on your iPhone. It doesn’t have to be Apple Music, but you can choose Spotify or any other app as long as you have it installed.
Dual SIM and 5G
If you want to use 5G with iPhone 12, you should limit yourself to using just one SIM card. If you added a second SIM card, both connections have become 4G. With iOS 14.5, support for both lines is introduced (at least in the US).
Technical solutions
As we said before, in addition to the superficial improvements, Apple also fixed some technical issues in the background. So CarPlay works as it should, and 11 “and 12.9” iPad Pros that didn’t connect to an external monitor via the USB-C multiport adapter can now.
How to install the beta version of iOS 14.5
As on previous occasions, go to your iPhone settings and check in “ General ” if there is an iOS update. Your iPhone will show you that it has found the new version and proceed to download and install it later. Make sure you have your mobile battery with more than 50% of its capacity.
What will the new version be?
Apple has revealed that the new version of iOS 14.6 is now available for developers who want to test the new beta. We still don’t know what changes will be made to iOS 14.6. We will update this article as new features are found.
