If there is a brand strongly committed to folding, it is Samsung. And it works well too, judging by its hegemonic market share in this segment, 80% in 2o22. Until now, the Asian firm was experimenting with the book format with its Fold (of which they are already in the fourth generation with the Galaxy Z Fold4) and with the shell type with the Flip (the latest version is the Galaxy Z Flip4), but This 2023 another type of folding could arrive from Samsung: the “triptych”
According to Yogesh Brarone of the rumored names in the smartphone sector, points out that this year the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 can be expected as usual, but they would not arrive alone. The Korean firm would finally launch a foldable phone on the market in three. Why finally? Because Samsung’s interest in experimenting with new formats is not new, although in previous years it has already filed patents for triptych phones like this one from 2021 or this one from 2020. In fact, at MWC 2023 we’ve already had the opportunity to see branded triple-fold concept phones.
In any case, both the concept and the patent indicate a device with two hinges: One with an inward fold and the other with an outward fold, resulting in a Z-shaped structure when partially unfolded.
The outward folding hinge would allow part of the folding screen to be used as display phone when folded, thus avoiding the integration of a secondary panel. Of course, with this new format one wonders how the device would be in terms of durability (and also thickness): firstly, because it has two hinges with their respective wrinkles, and secondly, because all folding screens are made of plastic and having a part on the outside means greater exposure to wear and tear and possible scratches.
