At this point in the movie, not paying for a cloud service means you either opt for local storage on your phone and download to other physical devices (maybe a hard drive or computer), or you use different free clouds simultaneously (with limited space). ). In my case it is the second option, but this implies that you do not have a single service or a single account that can save everything, simply because it does not fit: the 15 GB that Google offers for free per account are not enough, nor are the 2 GB of Dropbox or the 5 GB of iCloud. For this mission I found an ally in the form of an application: it is called FolderSync, it is free and has become essential to manage my clouds and my important data
The idea is this: if I had a paid cloud service with enough available size, I would dump my important folders there without worrying about anything else, but that doesn’t fit. FolderSync solves it sync information from certain folders to different cloud services (can also be done with an SD card) automatically once you have established the routes. So, it connects the cloud services of your choice to a certain folder on your device, so it is necessary to configure exactly which folder goes where.
In simple terms, FolderSync is a kind of file manager to manage your data locally and in the cloud, allowing you to copy, move and delete files from the phone. It is possible to save information such as music, photographs, videos, documents… and it allows protocols such as FTP, FTPS, FTPES, SFTP, Samba1/CIFS/Windows Share, SMB2, WebDAV.
Compatibility is not a problem. SO, you can sync it with major cloud services: I have a service for Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive from Microsoft, but the list is long (Amazon S3 Simple Storage Service, Box, CloudMe, Dropbox, Google Drive, HiDrive, Livedrive Premium, Luckycloud, MEGA, MyDrive.ch, MyKolab, NetDocuments, OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, OwnCloud, pCloud, Storegate, SugarSync, WEB.DE, Yandex Disk.
The version I used is the free version, available on the Google Play Store, which was sufficient for these tasks, although sometimes the advertisements are a bit annoying, since they appear in full configuration, so you have to be careful not to press them by mistake. Once we have made the presentations, we will see how it works.
How FolderSync works
Once you download and install it on the device, it is essential give you permissions to manage files, since you will need to be able to access them to synchronize them. After these concessions, it’s time to tryAdd an account‘ to configure the cloud services on which we want to save our files and information. Here, you will need to select the service and add your account with its respective identifiers.
Notice that you can use multiple Google Drives from different accounts, something I use, for example, to have my WhatsApp backup in a specific account so that it doesn’t take up space in the main account. If you plan to have multiple accounts, it’s worth giving them identifying names to differentiate them at a glance. As you add each account, save for the changes to take effect.
Then you will have to choose which folders to sync and where you want them to go. Tap the folder icon in the bottom menu and select “Create Folder Pair”. You will now have to enter the name (as before, it is better that it is easily identifiable and clear), choose the desired synchronization mode and the source and destination folder (the one in the cloud). Once finished, tap “Save Settings”.
Then it’s worth taking a look at the main screen to view history or schedule syncs, or go to settings (the three-line icon) to set up a PIN or notifications.
