Google’s graveyard is getting a little bigger. This time it’s not that they end up with an app or device (Google Glass said goodbye forever recently), but with a YouTube feature.
And that’s it, YouTube Stories will drop the store on June 26. It might be something you consume a lot or don’t even know exists, but Google’s goal is for us to focus on Shorts and posts in the Community section.
Goodbye, YouTube stories copied from Instagram
YouTube was the platform that reigned with a firm hand for consuming videos. However, with the launch of Snapchat and Instagram and the advent of “Historias” or “Stories”, Google has started to realize that this ephemeral content captures attention of users and shamelessly copied the feature for YouTube.
They’re all doing this because when TikTok burst onto the scene with its short, vertical video format, Instagram boosted its Reels even further, and YouTube knocked Shorts out of its sleeve. Ultimately, the more options, the better for content creators and for those of us who consume that content.
However, It looks like YouTube Stories wasn’t working too well and Google communicated on its support page that they will no longer be available on June 26. All stories made on this day or shortly before will remain live for up to seven days after the closing date.
Because? As the company explains, on YouTube there are many ways to share content like the aforementioned shorts, directs and life long videos.
Stories were a tool that creators needed to stay closer to their audience, but that connection is possible with “community” posts, which don’t expire and allow for more direct interaction.
In fact, it gave me to search the YouTube app to see what position stories are in right now and they appear in the ‘Subscriptions’ tab, but with a tiny size. And yes, there are creators like me who actively use them, so you’ll have to switch to “community” posts…
