The year 2023 was rich in launches in the portable console sector, thanks to the arrival of new, more efficient computer processors. Manufacturers could now fit chips normally reserved for gaming laptops into a much smaller form factor. The ROG Ally was the most notable console to abandon the gaming PC, surpassing the Steam Deck in many technical aspects.
But Valve did not stand still and launched the Steam Deck OLED at the end of last year, an improved version with a new screen and at a lower price than the ASUS model. For this reason, and after many rumors, now The ROG Ally X was presentedwith technical improvements that make it more attractive.
It should be noted that the ROG Ally X is not a completely new console, but a revision of the original ROG Ally; Therefore, we will not find revolutionary changes, but we will find many small differences to achieve a superior experience. For example, the processor is always the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme
Instead, ASUS focused on improving other aspects so that the processor can shine without limits. This is why the ROG Ally no less than 24 GB of DDR5-7500 RAM, which should be noticeable in many games. Since the Radeon graphics card is integrated into the CPU, it uses the same memory; thus, an increase in RAM will result in an increase in performance and the ability to use higher resolution textures.
Likewise, the internal design of the ROG Ally X has been modified to improve cooling and allow the Ryzen Z1 Extreme to perform at its best. New fans have 50% thinner blades
Another improvement that should be very visible concerns the battery, which now has a capacity of 80 Wh, double that of the original model. This will allow you to continue playing for much longer before plugging it in, and solves one of the main complaints we had with the portable console. In exchange, the ROG Ally X weighs 70 grams more, but that’s a sacrifice many gamers will make without hesitation.
At the same time, the design of the console also had to be adapted to the larger battery, and ASUS took the opportunity to implement ergonomic improvements
Another change that many players will appreciate is the presence of two USB-C ports instead of one. In exchange, the XG Mobile port, which was originally used to connect an external graphics card with an ASUS external module, has been removed. The company says players have “overwhelmingly” requested a second port. At least one of the ports is Thunderbolt and compatible with external graphics docks, so this option hasn’t been completely eliminated.
The ASUS ROG Ally X is now available for reservation in Europe for 899 dollarsand shipping will be made at the end of July.
