This week has been the big week for Samsung. The South Korean company introduced its Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, which make up the new line of foldable phones. And we must no longer speak of experimental devices: these are a fourth generation of mobiles that already benefit from some improvement.
In the meantime, at Apple we still have no trace of a foldable mobile. Yes, there are vague rumors of a distant future with folding screens in tablets, but even what little we know about the iPhone 15 still speaks of a completely fixed screen. dois this a bad sign
Age doesn’t matter if there’s still a long way to go
Apple continues to believe that foldable phones have several issues to address, starting with their screen technology. my partner Richard recently commented on Twitter how in Wallapop there were a lot of these mobiles for sale with some flaws in the bent screen cover, indicating rapid deterioration.
This causes the value of these mobiles to drop rapidly: in the same tweet from Ricardo, we can see a Galaxy Z Fold 3 from last year at 600 dollars while its initial sale price was 1,809 dollars. In other words, its value on the second-hand market drops very quickly
The price of foldables is gradually falling, but they are still niche terminals
And while we’re talking about the initial sale price, it keeps dropping, from prohibitive to just too expensive. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be sold for 1,799 dollars, which is 10 dollars less than its predecessor but much less money if we take into account the extremely high inflation compared to 2021. Yes, it is true that more more foldables are being sold, but in relative terms this is still a niche compared to the overall mobile industry.
And finally we have the software dilemma
It’s not that Apple has raised its laurels: it’s that in Cupertino they will consider launching a folding when its technology and the fusion between hardware and software convince. It’s very good news that Samsung has already had four generations of folding because it means that the technology is improving, but from Cupertino they think it’s not enough yet.
