The company that owns Pegasus is in financial trouble and could sell its software to other, more dangerous agencies.
The company NSO Group, creator of the famous spyware Pegasus, seems to be in serious financial problems after failing to make a single sale over a period of several months. The company has been blacklisted by the US government, which prevents it from doing business with many countries around the world.
As reported FinancialTimes, NSG Group was so desperate that it could not pay its payroll that it had to apply for a loan. However, this is only a temporary solution, which could lead to the company broke its own rules and started selling its spyware to anyone
Faced with a looming cash crunch so severe that Israel’s NSO Group, maker of the Pegasus cyberweapon, could miss its November 2021 payroll, the company’s CEO Shale Hulio made a startling suggestion. The rude CEO told a team representing the company’s majority owners in New York that month: why not start selling to risky customers again?
A news that can be dangerous
The company sells Pegasus software to hack iPhone and Android phones, although in theory this service is only provided to governments or law enforcement agencies. As is known, simply receiving a message, without the need to open or interact with it, can compromise the device and expose personal data.
The government of The United States banned the import and use of Pegasus, depriving the company of one of its most lucrative clienteles: American law enforcement. Apple itself sued the NSO Group and announced a program through which it would notify users who might have been infected.
The plan could now be to create a new company, with a new name, and transfer software and engineers to the new company
Since then the plan seems too far-fetched to be realized, because it would be strange if the government of the United States did not realize this deception. However, this is quite a dangerous thing as the software could fall into even worse hands and expose many more users. Until now, Pegasus was used for big personalities, not ordinary users. But with this plan, everything could change.
