If you thought that the external batteries that we know so much today were born from the demand for energy with the rise of all the devices and accessories that we always carry with us, you are very wrong. Apple already had an external battery decades agoalthough, logically, it was nothing like what we have today.

You can see this battery in the tweet above, intended for the Macintosh Portable and situations where it was impossible to plug it into the mains. It granted between 5 and 10 hours of autonomysomething unusual for the late 80s. On Reddit they share pictures of their original packaging:
On the inside, three large rechargeable batteries connected to each other so that they work in unison. And the funny thing is that these are batteries that are still sold in the United States, the company that manufactures them is still standing:

Fortunately, the external batteries we use today are more compact and dedicated to powering small portable devices. With the 15-20 hour battery life of the most popular MacBooks with Apple Silicon, we don’t need these extra fees. I’d love to see the reaction of the early engineers of the early Macintoshes if they saw that batteries can now even charge devices wirelessly.
